"I can't say enough about how well this went. We could not afford an encapsulation of our crawl space but were having humidity and water issues. Mark came out and was able to not only dry up the current water but he put a dehumidifier underneath that completely cleared up the humidity issue. He fixed our crawl space door as well so we have not had any further standing water issues. I have recommended him twice to others and they have been very happy."

"I hired them for some spray foam, but once they got into the space, they discovered that the work that they needed to do didn't need to get done. They could have just done the job, but they let me know that it wasn't needed. Such honesty is greatly appreciated. If I need some work done on the foundation or attic, I will most certainly work with them again. They are courteous, communicative, and provide excellent service. Simon was fantastic to work with."

"Some initial prep information was a bit lacking in detail, which caused rescheduling of work, but went well after that. Insulated crawlspace that was severely lacking insulation from cheap & crappy house builder (HH Hunt). Foam insulation on sides/walls & certain posts/beams, 10 mil drymat on ground, sealed off vents. Workers friendly & professional. Bit pricey but noticeable improvement soon after finish...floors were not cold in certain areas as before."
Unsealed porous foundation walls. Efflorescence has grown along the outside walls.
Plastic is laid out to protect the freshly pained walls and floor.
Open vents in the foundation walls allow outside air and moisture to infiltrate the crawl space, increasing the relative humidity and allowing mold spores to thrive inside.
Spray foam application in progress on warehouse walls.
The dirt floor is exposed, which will allow the moisture from the earth to rise uncontested into the crawl space, adding to the increase in relative humidity.

"This was our 2nd project with Ridge Remodeling. Initially they upgraded our attic insulation and made our home so much more comfortable. Then we worked with them to upgrade our entire first floor. Amazing results! I feel like I have an entirely new house. We have so much more functional space now and it's so beautiful. David and Matt were amazing to work with, so responsive to emails, texts and phone calls. No question was too small or insignificant. They work with an amazing team and the results are beautiful."

"Well, it depends on how you look at it. In the end, all is good but I hadn't planned to take the route that I did to get there. First, I want to say that all of the employees that I dealt with, from the Vicki on the phone to the supervisor (sorry, can't remember the name) and the guys that came to work (Bill and David), were the best! Very helpful, friendly and professional. In these days of extremely poor customer service, it was a breath of fresh air. I really appreciate it. Now, on to my story. Worth the read to get a good impression of the quality of work. We started getting an odor similar to a dead mouse from our vent ducts. We live in a very rural area, so mice are not uncommon. So, I bought the coupon for duct cleaning. Air Duct Care contacted me and we set up a time for them to come and do the work. Part of the service was a duct inspection, so they started there. I truly believe that if the ductwork been in good shape, that the cleaning would have been accomplished and they would have gone on their way. I say this because I don't want you to think that this is a bait and switch. They started the inspection in our crawl space and promptly found that it was a much bigger job than any of us had anticipated. What they found was the entire return duct from my AC system laying on the ground half full of water. Investigation revealed that the condensate line from the air handler had clogged which caused the condensate to backup into the air handler. It overflowed the drip pan and went directly into the return trunk. The trunk got so full and so heavy that it just dropped out of the system. The smell was due to dead mice (or so we thought) because the air handler was taking a suction on the crawl space rather than the return trunk. The crawl space smelled awful. The AC system was blowing this throughout the house. They offered to repair the return trunk and clean the ducting, but recommended against it. Further inspection revealed multiple trunks with damage to the outer insulation from external forces, some which might be mice. They said that they could clean it, but if mice had gotten into the ducts that they may not be able to clean it 100% and would not be able to keep the mice from returning to the ducts. I agreed and determined that we needed to replace the entire duct system in the crawl space. The supervisor described their materials to me and the process that they would use to replace the ductwork and I asked him to provide me an estimate. He did tell me that the insulation that they used was expensive, but it would be worth it in the long run. Again, this was NOT a bait and switch. This was truly the right thing to do. The existing ductwork had been installed following Isabel and was done quickly with low quality materials because it was done in a hurry with few available resources. The wrote up an estimate and sent it to me via email. Obviously, at first glance, the price was much higher than I had expected. But again, I had expected to pay the $165 to get the ductwork cleaned and inspected, not to get the entire duct system replaced. But looking at the job and the materials, the price was very reasonable. They deducted the cost of the coupon that I purchased as well as applying another Angie's List discount to the bottom line. If they had just come and replaced the ductwork, this would be the end of the review, but I really have to share what happened next. The first day of the job was ripout of the existing ductwork. This involved pumping out the water that had accumulated in the return duct. The return duct had been leaking, so there was water in the crawlspace (it is vinyl encapsulated, so it was obvious). So, ripout day went well. Crawlspace smelled awful, but they didn't complain. The next day, they returned only to find more liquid in the crawl even though I had corrected the condensate line issue and they had pumped it out the day before. They also mentioned that it seemed like there was liquid under the vinyl, which was not expected. This is why I'm continuing the review. They could have left it at that, but they didn't. They noticed that the main sewer line from the house out of the crawl was directly under the crawlspace access (covered in vinyl) but as it went toward the house, it was exposed from the vinyl and was PVC. But they said that it seemed that the liquid under the vinyl seemed to be more near the pipe under the vinyl. I said that if they wanted to they could cut the vinyl and see if they could tell where the source was. They could have just said (not my job) and carried on with the duct replacement, but they didn't. They cut back the vinyl to find a cast iron pipe connected to the PVC that had a huge crack in it. That is where the liquid was coming from and that is why the crawl smelled so bad! If they had just done their job and not investigated for me, we would not have located that problem. I really appreciate them going the extra mile! They even attempted to seal the crack with the waterproof tape in their kit while we waited on a plumber. I called a plumber, and he came to evaluate. He removed the tape to inspect it, determined that the pipe had to be replaced and we scheduled the work for the next day. The duct team resealed the pipe and the vinyl the best they could, pumped out the crawl and continued their job. The plumber came the next day and they just worked around him even though he had to work in the crawl access. Not a complaint the entire time. Bill and David are awesome workmen that Air Duct Care is very lucky to have. I really appreciate everything that they did for me that was over and above. The ductwork was completed, all is very sturdy and professionally done. But that was expected. I tell you, customer service like that is extremely rare these days. A contractor that does what he says he will do, and goes the extra mile even though he doesn't have to. Hopefully, I won't have to call them for more than an annual cleaning, but if I ever need a job like this done again, I know who I am calling!"

FAQs for batt, rolled or reflective insulation install or upgrade projects in Smithfield, VA

Batt insulation excels in vertical installations because it remains firmly in place and delivers consistent thermal performance. Blown-in insulation performs exceptionally in spaces such as attics, efficiently filling gaps in irregular areas.

Employing both insulation types according to their strengths enhances your home’s overall energy efficiency and comfort by providing a tailored solution for every space.

Start by measuring the square footage of the space, then match that area with the insulation thickness you need to hit your target R-value. Add a buffer for waste and odd-shaped spots so every cavity is covered.

Once you have a rough count, run it past a local insulation pro—their on-site advice will fine-tune the numbers and help you avoid costly miscalculations.

Old insulation that is dry, intact, and mold-free does not require removal before adding new insulation; stacking new insulation over it maintains effective thermal performance and boosts energy efficiency.

If the insulation is damp, moldy, or deteriorated, removal is necessary to eliminate health risks and ensure maximum effectiveness of the new layer. A professional insulation contractor will assess your situation and recommend the most effective solution.

Installing insulation in an average-sized home using batts or boards requires five to 12 hours. Using spray foam or blown-in insulation requires two to five hours. These timeframes are determined by the area’s size, accessibility, and whether old insulation must be removed.

Complex projects and hard-to-reach spaces demand extra time. Hiring an experienced insulation professional ensures that the installation is completed efficiently and correctly.

Insulation is measured by R-value, which defines how effectively it resists heat flow. A higher R-value provides superior thermal resistance, ensuring your home remains warm in winter and cool in summer.

Choosing the correct R-value is essential for maximizing energy efficiency and comfort, and it directly impacts long-term utility savings. Professional guidance determines the optimal R-value for your specific climate.
