That's because construction work is full of surprises, typically unpleasant ones that make jobs take longer than they should. Scheduling defensively wastes the contractor's time and makes the average customer wait longer for service. The result is that contractors, like doctors, often aren't ready at the scheduled time. If you want to maximize the chance of a contractor showing up on time, choose a day where you will be their first customer. (Though recognize that like a doctor's office, even then an emergency could pull them away.)
