He has taken an illegal amount of deposit ($3000 when $1000 is the legal limit in CA) and has not fixed his work or returned our deposit. He has not responded to phone or emails. There were many other things that went wrong, including him not tapping water pipes and flooding the kitchen and hallway, with water leaking down to the floor below, but I’ll focus this review specifically on tile. "We have had to completely redo all of the work done by Frederick Scafani. We were able to receive a full payout from his bond to cover the losses, so for anyone considering hiring him, please keep in mind you will not be able to collect any compensation from his bond. Besides being unable to complete the majority of the work our contract was for, Fred failed to level out the floor before laying tile, which caused all the grout to immediately come out. The tiles had a lot of lippage and movement, and some were chipped and cracked. The same goes for the wooden flooring he laid. All of the boards have significant give, cracking, and cupping, so all of the engineered wood also had to be demolished and relaid properly. Fred also collected $3000 prior to starting work, which is illegal. GCs are not allowed to collect more than 10% or $1000, whichever is less, by law. He stopped responding and refused to refund us for the work that was not completed or provide any receipts for the material"

Ben did two projects for us… a kitchen remodel and new foyer, and then a couple years later a bathroom, new closet, wood stove hearth and hardwood floors and paint throughout our downstairs. He is super detail oriented to the point of being almost OCD. Our projects turned out great and on budget. His bids were mid to higher priced but we went with him again because we know we can trust him and the job would be done correctly. Would definitely work with him again"
