He reviewed the proposed work with me, pointing out various aspects of it that aligned with another proposed contractor. He then gave me an official written quote on the spot. The foreman came by the next day to get the specifics so he could buy the necessary materials, and work commenced that afternoon. The project took three days, slightly under what they anticipated. The men removed and replaced a broken 8' x 7" closet shelf; looks new now. They removed, replaced, and painted two dry-rotted verticals from the garage door frames. Painted the entire foundation and a patio retaining wall without spilling a drop. Replaced an exterior electrical outlet box that had a broken door-flap. "I have hired contractors long enough to know a good one when I find one and Jose is a good one. Jose and his team painted very old brick on the exterior of our home. I have also painted brick (in our last home, along with many other surfaces) and there are a few things I have picked up along the way. For example - think of brick as a clay sponge; you cannot drive water directly into the brick while you are pressure washing to prep it because it will hold that water and destroy the paint if it is not allowed to completely dry. As I was beginning to explain this to Jose, he understood where I was going immediately and explained this same fact to me! Same with primer! A pro painter who actually uses a real primer! I've also been burned with change orders with other contractors before. When he came to do the work he asked me about a couple of additional small areas that I hadn't thought about painting. He didn't issue a change order to inflate the price! His team protected everything that was not supposed to be painted, and were all very pleasant and courteous. Start with a deep clean—most pros use a pressure washer to blast away dust and chalk. Patch cracks with masonry caulk, let them cure, then roll on an acrylic primer. Finish with two coats of high-quality exterior paint using a roller or, better yet, an airless sprayer for even coverage. Skip brushes on broad stucco walls; they’re slow and leave streaks.
Fresh paint seals hairline cracks, boosts UV resistance, and gives curb appeal an instant lift—often a plus when it’s time to sell. The trade-offs? Stucco requires a full cure before painting; the job is labor-intensive, and the wrong coating can trap moisture. Budget accordingly and use paint specifically designed for masonry to avoid peeling later.
When estimating the amount of paint you’ll need for a stucco house, plan on double the paint you’d use for smooth siding. A gallon that covers 400 square feet of flat wall often coats only about 200 square feet of textured stucco, so a 2,000-square-foot exterior may need 10 to 15 gallons.
Painting your stucco wall is a proven alternative to the expense and disruption of re-stuccoing the entire exterior. It refreshes the appearance and protects the surface without the investment of new material. Using high-quality, weather-resistant paint and following correct preparation procedures prevents moisture retention and ensures long-lasting performance. This method offers an efficient means to update your home while maintaining durability.
Rollers work, but an airless sprayer is the gold standard for full exteriors—it gets paint deep into the texture and speeds up the job. Reserve brushes for tight trim only. Whichever tool your exterior painting pro chooses, they’ll keep a wet edge and apply two thin coats for the longest-lasting finish.
