"Our steps leading to the deck had collapsed and I thought they needed to be replaced but Mr. Phillips was able to repair them using the existing material at significant savings for me. He also replaced the roofing material on a small screened room on the deck. He and his son were very prompt and reliable and the worksite was cleaner when they left than when they arrived!"

"(Note: Biggest factor driving my overall rating of "C" was price. I'll explain below.) Power House quickly responded to my email request for an estimate. I coordinated with Dan to come to the house to do an estimate, and Dan showed on time. We did a walk around to discuss the painting I wanted done. Dan was helpful, polite, professional, and provided a written proposal within 24 hours. The price on the proposal was $3,955. My gut told me this was high, but I bit the bullet and accepted it mainly because I wanted the work done as soon as possible; Power House did a decent power wash job on the house last winter; and Dan's professionalism and timely communications gave me confidence in the company. Work was scheduled for a couple of weeks after I accepted the proposal, and was completed in about 4 days with one painter (Charles) on some days, and Charles had an assistant on one or maybe two of the days. Charles was polite and conscientious. His supervisor (Kevin) worked with me and Charles to find a good match for the back doors, and I appreciated Kevin's and Charles' responsiveness and diligence toward finding the match. Negative: I came to the house toward the end of the first day of painting to find Charles wearing headphones while on his ladder, with rubber sandals and socks which he wore throughout the job. This was unsafe, and unprofessional. (I expect painters to at least where closed toe shoes/boots). Also, Charles' assistant was having a cigarette on my front porch, talking on his cell phone! I understand taking a break, but don't think it's OK to light up on my front porch. (Fortunately I did not find any cigarette butts laying around). In summary, the quality of the job was good. But the price was unreasonable. Company did a power wash first. Then 1 or 2 painters, four x 6 hour days, two ladders, 4-5 cans of paint at $1000 a day? C'mon man! Fair price would have been in the $2000-$2500 range. I feel like I was taken advantage of. Regardless, after beating myself up a bit, I paid the invoice, and decided to use Angie's List to take out my frustration. My own fault for not shopping around. I will not use Power House again, or recommend them to others."

"He did the whole house for 1/4 of the other estimates I got! Because of that I went around to my other neighbors homes, & told them. He did do my neighbors house across the street. They also were very satisfied w his work. Would highly recommend him. I've been busy since he did the work, so this is the first chance I got to respond. I will also be posting his business info. & recommendation, to the next Holleybrook HOA meeting! There's a lot of homes in here! His business is sure to grow! Also does decks, concrete, aggregate driveway sealing by hand, bricks, roofs, Aeration, seeding, & more! Great work! Great price! Great reward! Thank you, Julio!"

"Their gutter guy put some gutters on my house and I was not impressed with that so far. Three of them already topped off. They didn't do that great of a job. When I did have a leak in the house, I had to call them like four or five times to get them to come over to repair it and finally, it just got to the point where I just said to heck with it and I decided to get somebody else to do it. Their guy never called me. I waited for him all day. They did a beautiful job on the roof. I was impressed with that but if anything goes wrong, they weren't so good. They did an excellent job doing the house. They cleaned up but I didn't think it was that great because I ended up with three flat tires from nails. Other than that, they were very courteous and everything else. They did fine. I was happy with it. They did show up with the wrong shingles and started putting them on and thank God I was there that day and stopped it. I'd recommend them to somebody else with the portion that once they're done, it may take you a while to get them back to repair anything. They were pretty good on their prices."

FAQs for deck or porch repair projects in Williamsburg, VA

Composite and ipe hardwood decks provide the longest durability for your outdoor space. Composite decks last 30 years exactly, and ipe hardwood decks continue reliably for 75 years when maintained properly. Frequent cleaning and sealing preserve these materials and protect them against weathering. This exceptional endurance minimizes future repair needs and offers a solid, lasting investment.

Replacing your deck directly increases your home’s market value and enhances its curb appeal. A new deck returns between 50% and 65% of its cost in additional home value at resale. This upgrade not only modernizes your outdoor living space but also significantly bolsters buyer interest, ensuring that your investment adds both functionality and an attractive aesthetic.

You should replace your deck when visible signs of wear begin to compromise safety and functionality. The quality of maintenance and the durability of the chosen materials determine when a deck reaches the end of its life. For example, decks crafted from superior materials like mahogany or ipe hardwood can last over 50 years, while cedar decks require replacement after 15 to 20 years. Regular inspections help guide this decision.

Your deck needs to be replaced when clear structural issues compromise its safety. Indicators include soft spots, sunken boards, scattered wood shavings, and hollow sounds that indicate rot or pest damage. These symptoms show that simple repairs are insufficient to maintain a secure deck. A professional evaluation is essential to confirm whether full replacement is necessary to protect your outdoor living area.
