Dan tested our water, explained the system we have in the house currently, and soon deducted that our boiler system had been serviced about the same time that the problem began. As it turned out, the Anode rod that was put in our water heater was the wrong type, and was causing the iron to pull from the water and caused the smell. Once we removed the anode rod, the smell went away and the iron problems diminished almost immediately. We did change to resin guard salt pellets to help the softener system stay clean.
