Comment: I have a home in Silver Lake on a hill. I have a garage, foundation and crawlspace on the bottom half of the house, and the 1-story living area on the top half of the house (i.e., the back of the house is built into the hill). The house was built in 1928 and remodeled in 2012. Part of the remodeling involved work on the house structure attached to the foundation (e.g., adding new beams under the kitchen) and, in addition, further work was done later to replace piers, add cripple wall sheering and other things. So, I now plan to build a roof deck. It is a standard flat composite roof that is not built for a walking area. The roof structure will likely need to be improved and reinforced. I don't intend to build a large deck structure on top - probably only roofing, waterproofing membrane above, and then either (a) mortar and tile above that (via ledgers), or (b) a stepping stone system with adjustable piers spaced around the roof, with tiles snapping down to form a contiguous surf
