"This is a contractor we all want to find, to hire someone that will not try to talk you int.o a new furnace when the thermostat just needs to be reprogrammed after replacing weak batteries. The service man tested a few electrical components on the furnace, and he concluded that the furnace was not the problem. His service call lasted less than an hour, I learned a few things, and the temperature is no longer 57 but a more comfortable 72."

"Our air conditioning system was not working properly. We called the company that put the system in and their technician told us we needed to install a new condenser. We called Parrish for an estimate on a new condenser based on Home Advisor's recommendation. Parrish Services came to our home, performed a diagnosis, and determined we did not need a new condenser. Ended up saving us thousands!"

"A/C stopped working on a Sunday. Called Total Comfort, answering service answered call, and asked if my situation was an emergency. I stated it was not, so they took a message. Promptly on Monday morning, my call for service was returned. My Trane XL14i air conditioner was not providing cold air. The fan on the compressor would turn, just no cold air. A technician arrived at about 11:30 and discovered the capacitor was bad. I was pleased that it wasn’t more serious and was back up and running in about an hour. He also checked the system pressure and ensured it was within specs. I could have been lied to and told the whole compressor needs to be replaced for thousands of dollars, so credit for integrity. The capacitor sells on-line for about $25 and I was charged $300 for the service. I, however, do not have the training required to diagnose the problem, nor the overhead costs associated with running a business, so the cost is within reason. Overall, I’m very pleased with this experience and am looking to have my furnace replaced with some system upgrades, and will likely have Total Comfort provide that service as well."

FAQs for air conditioning projects in Stevensburg, VA

Most professional HVAC technicians require two to three hours to complete an expansion valve replacement. The timeframe depends on your unit's accessibility and whether additional repairs are needed. The process involves recovering refrigerant, removing the old valve, installing the new component, and recharging the system. Scheduling during less busy seasons may result in more convenient appointment times.

Operating your air conditioner with a malfunctioning expansion valve isn't advisable. Continuing to run the system could potentially damage other components, particularly your compressor, which is significantly more expensive to replace. If you notice performance issues like inconsistent cooling or unusual noises, it's best to have your system inspected before continuing regular use.

Expansion valves don't have a standard replacement schedule, as their longevity depends on system usage, maintenance frequency, and environmental factors. Regular professional maintenance helps identify potential valve issues before they cause system failure. Having your HVAC system serviced annually allows technicians to monitor component condition and recommend preventative replacements when necessary.

Refrigerant leaks require prompt professional attention. If your expansion valve is leaking, you'll likely notice reduced cooling performance and possibly hear hissing sounds near the unit. Addressing leaks quickly prevents further system inefficiency and avoids the environmental impact of released refrigerant. Your HVAC technician will need to repair the leak and recharge the system with the proper refrigerant type and amount.

Because many AC issues present similar symptoms, professional diagnosis is recommended. Problems like inadequate cooling, inconsistent temperatures, or strange noises could indicate expansion valve issues, but might also stem from refrigerant leaks, electrical problems, or airflow restrictions. A qualified HVAC technician has the tools and expertise to accurately identify the root cause and recommend appropriate repairs.
