"In the Fall of 2020, my husband and I decided to remodel our run down 1978 home. We were spending more time at home due to Covid, and we were ready to finally make our home into a peaceful sanctuary for our family. After living here for almost 20 years, our “To Do” list had grown rather long. We needed windows, siding, bathrooms (no longer set in the 70’s), and more room in our 1500 sq ft dwelling. We excitedly met with an architect to see how we could extend our house and add more windows and natural light in the process. We had the plans and were ready to start construction. Then, the general contractor we had chosen ghosted us. Knowing that this was going to be a big job that would require a very large chunk of change, we knew we needed to make an informed decision. We already had trust issues after having chosen a contractor recommended by a friend who flaked out on us. So, it’s a big deal to make a decision about who is going to redo your home into a place that you will love and enjoy, stay on time, on budget and use our money wisely. This was our first major home project and we planned to meet with several contractors to find out how the process would work and how they could stay within our budget. We looked on Yelp first and searched for someone in our general location, (we love to support our local businesses). The first listing was Alter Construction. The reviews mentioned “responsive”,” great communication'', “trustworthy'', “best materials”, “great craftsmanship,” all the things that you’d want in a general contractor. I checked out their website and really liked what I saw, so I filled out the form and got an immediate response to set up a phone call the next day. After speaking to Eli for the first time, I got a warm and friendly vibe. We set up a meeting at our home to discuss the project and when Eli and Cynthia came over we talked about what we wanted to accomplish and let them know that this remodel would totally change our quality of life going forward. They showed us some photos of their previous jobs and their qualifications were obvious, all of the projects were amazing. The happy client testimonials spoke to Eli and Cynthia’s character and genuine desire to help us reach the quality of life we had longed for for many, many years. Needless to say, we never met with any other contractors, our minds were made up during that first meeting to work with Eli and Cynthia at Alter Construction. We went back and forth via email about what we needed and at our next meeting, we went over the scope of work, timeline, total cost of the project and the payment scheduled. We gave them a check as a deposit, but Eli let us know that until the City’s permits were in hand, no money would be deposited. Once the permitting process was complete, work went fast. We completely moved out and 5 months later, we were back in a BRAND NEW HOME! We did have a bit of a delay during the project waiting on the City inspectors, but the communication between us and Alter was constant. We felt very comfortable calling or texting and Eli was always available and he treated our home with special love and care as if it were his own. Eli is a perfectionist and is always the first to notice if any little thing is off and is quick to reply with, “I’ll fix it!” or “I’m on it!” and he is! The end result is stunning, we have so much more space, our bathrooms are gorgeous, the exterior is perfect and EVERYTHING inside and out is new and improved! We really formed a nice friendship with Eli and Cynthia and miss not talking to them as regularly as before. They are amazing, honest and trustworthy people who really care about you and want the best for you. They are more than happy to help your remodeling dreams come true."

"Kamal was extremely helpful in surveying the structural integrity of our dock. He went through immense detail to outline everything that needed to be repaired and was very efficient in getting it back to me for our broker in the sale of our home. I highly recommend Alaska engine engineering!"

"

We have a small heavily landscaped yard with a number of large live oak trees. Our house has a metal flat roof and had collected 2 years worth of leaves and debris.  Abel arrived as scheduled to provide an estimate of $1,200.00 for proposed work.  He did not get up on the roof when making the estimate.  He committed to bringing a crew of 4 including himself.  He and his 3 crew men arrived on time as scheduled at 9 am and worked until 4 pm.

They removed some branches, small trees, and bushes as agreed and cleaned out all overgrown beds.  They bagged all leaves and removed debris from the property in two separate trips.  We had a roofer coming at the same time to repair some small leaks.  Both Abel and the roofer took photos of the roof and reviewed with me.  Abel said that the work to clean off the roof and to really clean the gutters would require additional work and power washing.  Based on the photos, I agreed with him.  We agreed for his crew to return the next day and to power wash the roof and gutters for an additional $400.00.  We also agreed for an additional $100.00 to remove tree branches that were over the house on the long side of the house and that were pathways for ants, bugs, etc.  They removed a large amount of tree limbs to protect the roof and did a great job - well worth the add on costs.

Per the original quote, they removed about 15 large established bushes in the beds and cleaned them up.  They trimmed vines as requested, weeded beds, and mowed the grass.  Returned the next day at 8 am as scheduled to power wash roof and gutters.

Summary:  We had let our yard get overgrown and our previous lawn company was not good at maintaining and removing leaves and debris.  We thought the original estimate was on the higher side, but based on the actual work performed, quality of work, as well as additional work identified, we felt it was justified based on the condition of the property.  Abel and his crew were very professional.  Would suggest to be very clear about your expectations and be realistic depending on the condition of your property. I was working from home while they were working.  I had to remind him and his crew about some things to cover, and if I had not been home, I am not sure they would have been done.  However, I believe Abel would have come back and taken care of them if they had been missed.  I appreciated Abel actually pointing out some issues that we were unaware as taking care of them actually will protect our home and property.  We will using him for another smaller project as a follow up.

Small jobs welcome

"I should have used Charles Todd Helton. A friend recommended me to another architect. I used the other. Big mistake on my part. I had a bad experience using the other one. I found Charles to be more professional, honest, more tuned in to what I wanted for a home design."

"They also removed and replaced house cedar siding for us and everything looks beautiful. They did a fantastic job and we will use them again. It was a dutch style exterior door they installed for us that replaced a wider french door. They did all the framing, moved an electric box, siding, and added a patio roof overhang to cover the door, everything works great and door is hung perfect so it stays in place and does not swing open or closed by itself."
