"We were in a hurry because new cabinets were to arrive soon and doing this ceiling repair would be much easier without new cabinets in the way. The contactor was very prompt to come give an estimate (the next day!) which was great. Responsiveness = A. Upon arrival, however, he did not remove his street shoes at the door - not a biggie but also not very courteous as he did leave shoeprints on our glossy hardwood floors. He seemed knowledgeable about what was needed (although it wasn't a tough job) and gave us an estimate on the spot, which was also great. However, upon presenting him with the Angie's List 10% discount coupon he has on the website, he refused to accept it, saying "...he really didn't want to deal with it..." Professionalism = C. Needing the job done quickly, we contracted him to do the work anyway. He said he would send his best drywaller in 2 days (not including the weekend), which he did. Punctuality = A. He also sent a helper - even better! The two men were polite and got to work immediately and were done in less than 2 hours! However, they did leave splashes of both dry and wet drywall compound that we had to clean up...on the floor, on the walls, on the doorknobs, even on the window which was like, really? The quality of the actual repair was good; the contractor promised we would never be able to tell but...I'm the son of a home builder and I can tell. I've had other drywall repairs made that I truly cannot tell were done. On that basis an A means I cannot tell and a B means I can. Quality = B. As far as the price goes, the contractor estimated the job would take about 1/2 day (4 hours), so the agreed price was $250. However, the job was completed in less than half that time (2 hours) with no discount - but we needed the job done quickly and the contractor exceeded on that account."

Customers say: Quality work

"Should have been a six week job and it turned into a 12 week job.  Very stressful for my wife and I.  I do not feel that Tom listened to my concerns about the work and I don't feel he tried to address those concerns.  Problems with the layout drawing from the cabinet supplier and how his folks installed the cabinets.  I feel Tom would not take responsibility for being the cabinet installer and his being responsible for working with the cabinet designer to make sure the layout and install went as it was planned to go.  Problems caused the coutner tops to have to be modified due to the base cabinet install.  Tom blamed the kitchen designer, but I feel it is Tom's job to work out any of these problem as part of the contractor and install on the job prior to having the counter tops installed.

UPDATE: Below is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Tom Phelps on Saturday 9-13-2014 and his response on Sunday 9-14-2014.  This was 5-6 weeks before the beginning of the work.  The layout drawings and kitchen views were attached to this e-mail.  Included in the e-mail was the brand of cabinets we finalized the project on, the name of the designer, his phone number and his e-mail.  Tom acknowledges receipt of this e-mail by saying he will contact him with any questions.  Tom had this information 5-6 weeks prior to beginning the work and in fact I sent this information to him several times during this 5-6 week period.   Tom's crew installed both runs of the base cabinets 3/4" short of what the layout drawings showed they should be.  They installed the filler pieces in the wrong orientation causing the base cabinet runs to be short.  He would not take responsibility for this and even to this day will not.   I don't know if he is purposefully being misleading or can't remember, but either way it is his responsibility as the contractor to manage the job and he did not do a very good job on my project.  He even states this was a 3 week job and the counter tops took 3 weeks, this is 6 weeks.  The work took 12 weeks to complete. We started well in advance and should have been done by Christmas, but Tom did not finish until almost New Years so our house was a mess during the holidays which we planned properly to have the work done except for the poor job of managing the project.

Email: [member name], I will call the cabinet guy on Monday. The panel should always come a little larger than the exact size of the cabinetry. The crown molding should be fine at two and five eighths. Thanks for the information, now I can see what you are talking about. Have a good weekend, Tom

On Saturday, September 13, 2014 4:57 PM,

Tom:   Here are the view layouts of the kitchen.  If you open [member name] you will see the back of the peninsula.  The two doors tot he left actually open and are a cabinet.  The two tot he right are a single width panel with the doors applied.  My cabinet guys question is since this covers the back of a 18 & 15" cabinets do you want this exactly 33" wide or would you like it a little wide, say 1/4" so you have extra to trim if you need it.   I am purchasing cabinets from Direct plus.  Medallion brand.  My contact there is Jim.  317-337-1400 they are closed on Sun & Mon.    Would you consider calling him to get more clarity on why this might be necessary?  He seems to think it might be when mating the panel to the actual cabinet next to it.  Not sure why?   Thanks.   [member name]

"I had two wall sections with damage that needed to be repaired with new drywall and paint. Vitaly from Apex Design Build did a beautiful job on the walls -- I'm very impressed. I hope not to need that skill again any time soon, but I will certainly contact them the next time I need another wall repaired -- it's virtually impossible to tell there had been damage. He also adjusted a ceiling fan that had been installed by a friend (a mistake -- use a professional!) and it took him only 15 minutes. I have always been very impressed by how Apex Design Build cleans up everything when they are done working -- and they even took it away with them. Excellent work and in a timely manner for me."

"It went very well. I had Jeff and his crew do some work for me a couple years ago. They were so good that I waited a couple months to have them come back. I live in a 100 year old house. The upstairs air conditioner had leaked and damaged the wall and window sill. They rebuilt and made it look new. Downstairs my kitchen light in a drop ceiling had stopped working. Jeff suggested LED lights, and he was right. It's much brighter. He also installed a window air conditioner in the kitchen and made a plexiglass window where there had been ply wood holding in the air conditioner. When he got into the kitchen light, he had to rewire, as well. I couldn't be more pleased with the job they did. The kitchen is much brighter, and the upstairs bedroom is restored. They are fast, efficient, and fair. I highly recommend them. They always go the extra mile to make everything look nice. They do so at a minimal cost to the customer. They also clean up and haul everything off. Here are some before and after pictures."

"I had quite a list of items that needed completion and one handyman was able to do it all.  When Greg reviewed my list and we walked throughout the house he indicated this would take multiple days (as I suspected).  So most of the work was completed during a few days one week and the kitchen floor was completed over two days the following week.
I couldn't be more pleased.  There was so much to do we discussed what order and confirmed I had all the materials.  After insulation was blown in the porch ceiling and the porch ceiling put back in place you couldn't even tell the ceiling had been down before.  Greg inserted fiberglass insulation around new windows that had been installed, then miter cut and installed interior trim to conceal the gap between new windows and the existing window frame.  He did this to every window in the house.  He also replaced a window frame that had been damaged during window installation.
He moved one ceiling fan and installed another new ceiling fan.  Greg also installed wire shelves in the basement.
But the biggest single task, and the most daunting, was to install a new linoleum floor in the kitchen.  Many flooring companies looked at the "soft spot" in the kitchen of my 1916 home and didn't want to tackle the job.  It seemed they wanted to lay new linoleum over the old linoleum and call it a day but that approach wouldn't fix the nails working their way up through the old linoleum.  Greg removed the old linoleum floor and opened up the floor so we could see the joists underneath to determine the problem.  He repaired the floor, making it smooth for the new linoleum.  All appliances were removed from the kitchen for the work and then reinstalled.
I'm very happy with the workman and the quality of work performed.  I will use Handyman Connection again.

FAQs for acoustic ceiling tiles install projects in Brooklyn, IN

A drop ceiling is a type of secondary ceiling that is dropped down below the actual ceiling of a room, hence the name. It’s made up of ceiling tiles (made of fiberboard, foam, wood, metal, or plastic) supported by a metal grid. The space between the drop ceiling and the structural ceiling can be used to hide wiring, pipes, and HVAC ducts.

Most drop ceiling installations take about two to three days, including the time needed to build the grid frame, install it, and place each ceiling tile properly. Your installation might take more time if you need to modify plumbing, HVAC ducts, or electrical wiring to accommodate the new ceiling.

Most drop ceilings require a clearance of at least three inches from the structural ceiling, though you’ll likely need more than that to make space for pipes, ducts, lights, fans, sprinklers, or wiring. In many places, building codes require a minimum ceiling height of seven feet, which can limit the amount of clearance you’ll have between your drop ceiling and structural ceiling.

Yes, you can paint a drop ceiling, but it’s not always recommended. Painting a drop ceiling can sometimes void your warranty because using improper paint or technique can cause the tiles to sag. Paint can also negatively affect the fire resistance, soundproofing, and light reflection of the panels. Consider these downsides before taking on ceiling painting costs.
