"Made the appointment Thursday for Saturday at 2:30. Saturday 2:30 I get a knock on the door, Brian introduced himself... clean, friendly, and ready to hit the chimney. Gets his equipment, and gets to work. He cleaned out and inspected the firebox. Checked out the flue and the protective screen then cleaned the chimney. When he was done with the inside, he went up on the roof and finished inspecting the chimney from the top making sure that everything was functioning as it should. Came back in, packed up all his gear, made sure the area was clean. I asked about their "Fire and Ice" system. Gave me the info I needed, no hard sell simply answered my questions. Based on this experience I will use them again to clean my other fireplace and other services that they offer."
Black stains shows evidence of hazardous cracks in firebox. Top 6” and lintel bar removed from fireplace. Not ever a good idea. Potentially making fireplace unsafe to use.

"I called a couple companies about my Dyna Flame 3000G fireplace that was not working. After talking with one company that told me Dyna Flame was out of business, and replacement parts could not be found, I was discouraged. I decided to call around some more for other opinions. One other company did not get back to me. Gary called me back, and we scheduled an appointment. He came out, checked a number of things, and finally zeroed in on the high temperature device. He was able to find a replacement in his truck, and now I have a working fireplace.
Given the estimate of $3000-$6000 dollars to replace my fireplace from the other company, I was quite happy to pay Gary the $200 for the service call and part. Thanks Gary!

"I booked the appointment two weeks out, and without having to confirm the appointment, Rich showed up early, was very friendly, and got right to work.  He installed the gas log set in our fireplace very quickly, and even painted some of the exposed brass fittings black so they wouldn't stand out or distract from the logs.  He was very helpful with questions we had, and offered some free solutions to update the look of our fireplace doors (why the builder chose to install fireplace doors with tacky gold trim I will never know).  He told us to have the lines inspected every 5 years or so, just to make sure there were no leaks.
He is now my go-to guy for all things chimney-related.

"Fireplace Door Guy definitely exceeded our expectations. Not only was Danny (the owner) professional and responsive, the quality of workmanship was truly artwork. Our custom fireplace door is now the centerpiece of our main living room. We were so pleased with the door, within a month we ordered a 2nd door for our bedroom fireplace. Thank you Danny"

"Where do I begin here? First off, I contracted Manny through Angies List. Initially, I was looking for someone to just do recessed can light installation for the house I just bought here in Cypress, CA last year 2019 (1960 built house). Out of the 7 people I contacted, Manny was one of the very first of 3 contractors who responded to me and scheduled a visit to quote promptly. The other two who eventually came to give me a quote told me I would need more lights than Manny had quoted and the difference in pricing for the job varied dramatically. Not only that, it took them 3-4 days to get back to me. Manny, however, was able to tell me ON THE SPOT the day he came to quote exactly what could be done and how much it would cost after seeing the house which also included the cost of wiring and patching the holes up to look original. Honestly, I was skeptical about this at first as this is definitely outside the norm for contractor quotes, but WOW as I surprised when he not only kept to his word, he did an amazing job! I had over 52 recessed lights installed in my home, all done by Manny himself! Not only was it the perfect amount of lighting (the amount the other contractor’s had said I would have needed would have been WAY EXCESSIVE), once the work was done, you couldn't even tell were the holes were made. He patched, painted and textured them to blend in with the original look. Awesome job on this. After seeing how amazing his work was, I felt like this was my chance to ask about some other things I had on my checklist. Since the home had a dated interior design (1960’s home) I wanted to have a more modern look, so I decided to ask him if he did flooring as well. The second floor had not been touched much by the previous owners and it had old shaggy carpeting so I wanted to go with laminate flooring that matched the rooms on the first floor which were slightly more modern. Because of the attention to detail he put with the installing of the lights and the patching of the holes to ensure they were as perfect as possible, I decided to go with Manny on this as well when he said he would be able to do this. Keeping up with my due diligence, I had contacted 2 other flooing contractors through Angies List for flooring specifically to compare with Manny’s quotes. However, to my disappointment and irritation, neither of them got back to me or followed up after they came and measured my flooring. Why bother going through the trouble of coming and giving me a quote and then never following up? This was clearly a sign as Manny had quoted me a great price and, once again to my astonishment and delight, he completed the job himself and finished it in about a week. The floor looks amazing and he even took the time to replace the old floorboard nails screws which removed all the squeaks and creaks. He really went above and beyond on that one. After being impressed and amazed now on two different projects that I had asked him to complete, I felt like I could trust him with even more projects on my checklist of home improvements and began to ask him about other projects he could work on which as on an even grander scale. The home had an old brick fireplace that I wanted to be replaced with something more modern and Manny told me he could do it (at this point, I would have been more surprised if he said he couldn’t do something!). Even during COVID, he was able to get schedule an appointment out to home showroom that sold materials for home renovations (don’t worry, the showroom had very strict COVID procedures, taking temperatures, enforcing capacity and providing masks!) to look at Quartz slab designs and get quotes for the work. For this job, Manny had his crew who specialized in fireplaces to come to my place and finish the job. The result was even more amazing than I had envisioned. It took about 1 week for the slab to be cut to the specifications to frame over the old fireplace which they readied by removing all the bricks and measuring what was there and just one day to install the fireplace itself. Now, everyone who comes to my place always compliment how stunning it looks, especially those who saw what it looked before the upgrade. The difference is night and day in my living room now, thanks to Manny and his team. It doesn’t end here either. After fireplace project, I decided to update the flooring for the kitchen, bathroom and entry way on the first floor. For this area, I decided to go with porcelain tile. Manny gave me a great quote on this and surprisingly beat the price per sq. ft of the tile's that I had researched myself. I couldn’t miss out on this so I once again contract him for this project. For this job, Manny brought in one of his crewmembers who had over 14 years of experience in flooring complete this job! Without a doubt, of all the jobs I contracted Manny to complete, this is the one that still leaves me in awe to this day. They asked me what pattern I wanted, how wide I wanted the grout lines and what grout color I wanted and provided me with suggestions and advice. After completion, the floors looked beautiful! To go even further, there were a couple tiles that the I personally didn't see any problem with, but his flooring expert didn't like the way it turned out, so he took it upon himself to remove the tile he just installed in and redid the work. To add to this, there were a couple tiles that had a mark that I was unable to remove so I let Manny know and he had these replaced right away! After this glowing review, I should note that these projects were not completed back to back. Manny’s services are in high demand (this review should be a small insight and understanding as to why that would be the case), so all of these projects were completed from the span of November 2019 to June 2020. So this one review is for various projects over the months that he completed to my immense satisfaction. Manny and his crew are the type of people who take pride in their work and even if YOU are satisfied with the work, if they see some flaw, they will take it upon themselves and fix it. Also, if you are not pleased or if there is something you want changed, they will make sure that you are happy with the end result. I would, without question or hesitation, recommend anyone who needs work with their home to work with Phaseworks and talk to Manny! You WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Actually, I take that back…you may be disappointed when you find out that he is booked for when you wanted him to start because he’s such a sought after contractor! And with the results he provides, I can completely understand why. To this day, I still message Manny to see if there are other projects he can work on. Manny is always honest and if there is a job he can't do, he won’t BS with you and let you know if someone else would be more suitable for the job. I plan to continue getting work done at my house through Phaseworks. Again, I HIGHLY recommend working with Manny, he is a great, honest guy and he will not let you down. Thank you again Manny!!! P.S. Unfortunately I never took before pictures, but I was able to pull some from the home listing sites, luckily they still were there and not taken down when I bought the home. Anyways, these are 100% accurate before pictures, besides the fact that they had the furnished look on some sections. I also will add the after pictures so you can see the difference!"

"We hired Fireplace Freddie to inspect and fix our 100-year-old fireplace & chimney, making it safe to burn real wood again. Nick and Scott came out quickly, and used cameras to inspect. During the inspection Nick visually showed me what the issues were. He also verbally suggested the fix. After the inspection, we received pics and a price quote to fix the issues by installing a stainless steel sleeve in the chimney. We sent the pics and info to 3 other businesses to compare prices. After speaking with Nick numerous times, including 2 conversations with my old school contractor buddy who asked Nick just about every ridiculous question he could possibly think of, Nick remained cool and answered all of his questions. Nick also agreed to do the job with a permit from LADBS which they included in the price, so we decided Fireplace Freddie was the right company to do the job. Patrick was our installer. He had a co-worker, but I didn't catch his name. They showed up on time, covered the floor and furniture and did their job. It took a few days as they said it would, but they were on time, clean and friendly. Each day they came, they covered everything. Each night, they cleaned up and uncovered everything before they left. Patrick also dealt with our LADBS inspector who admittedly was not well versed in chimney repair. Patrick was very friendly, gave the inspector the information he needed including printed specs from the manufacturer, and we passed inspection w/o issue. Scott came back 1 week later to test the fireplace. He lit a fire to make sure it was all good, and it is. To sum it all up, everyone was friendly and professional. The job went super smooth, and we are able to use our wood burning fireplace again, safely.  I would highly recommend Fireplace Freddie. A+"

"After many roofing estimates that were incredibly high and came with either no financing or high interest financing, I stumbled upon Zen Builders. Simon was attentive, knowledgeable, and on top of his game. My roof was completed in three days, it's beautiful, and there were NO LEAKS when the rains came a few days later. The workers were professional, considerate, and the clean up was amazing. No trace of having construction in my yard. Because I was so happy with the work, I mentioned to Simon that I would love to have him come back and do a few more projects. I ended up with an even better financing option (both loans are well-within my budget) and a GORGEOUS new patio cover complete with a surprise ceiling fan in the middle! The patio is now white, and they painted the trim of my house to match. They also fixed my heating/AC ducts, insulated my attic, and for free, added plywood, so I can actually store items up there. I have never had an issue getting ahold of Simon or his sister, Kineret (Kerry). When there was an adjustment needed to the air ducts, the workers came out quickly (amid the COVID-19 quarantine) and simply fixed it! I couldn't ask for more! All work took less than a month to complete and I never felt pressured, ignored, or bamboozled. I have recommended Zen Builders to many of my friends. I hope they recover from the imposed quarantine to continue to provide excellent service."

FAQs for fireplace and wood stove service projects in La Mirada, CA

Start with a professional inspection. If damage is limited to a few bricks or the crown, a targeted repair helps keep costs and disruption to a minimum. Severe leaning, widespread mortar failure, or major fire damage usually signals it’s time for a complete teardown and rebuild. Your contractor will outline both price tags, but remember that rebuilding a failing stack is often cheaper than repeated patch jobs and the water leaks or fire hazards they allow.

Cracks provide water with an easy path into the masonry, weakening the bricks and mortar and increasing the risk of collapse or fire. Gaps can also let hot gases and sparks escape into attic spaces. Call a chimney pro as soon as you see cracking so they can seal small joints or recommend a larger rebuild before minor damage turns into a costly emergency.

Smoke rolling back into the room often indicates a blocked flue, a broken damper, or a drafting issue. Have a sweep inspect the damper, flue liner, and any obstructions right away. Most fixes involve clearing debris, repairing the liner, or adjusting the damper so the fireplace pulls air correctly. Don’t light another fire until a professional pinpoints the cause and confirms your system is venting safely.

Most policies cover chimney repairs caused by a sudden, covered event, such as lightning, a fallen tree, or a house fire. They won’t cover damage that stems from neglected maintenance or everyday wear. Review your policy or contact your agent before scheduling work to determine what documentation your insurer requires and what costs you will be responsible for.

Component life spans vary. Clay tile or cast-in-place liners last close to 50 years, while stainless-steel liners last 15 to 20 years. Mortar requires attention every 25 to 30 years, while crowns last 50 to 75 years. Use these numbers as a maintenance roadmap: schedule regular inspections, budget for future upgrades, and replace parts before age-related cracks develop into more significant problems.
