"My daughter put her foot completely through the flooring (plywood and all) in the bathroom. You could see into the crawl space, and there were other places where the floor felt like more holes were likely. It was very stressful, as I knew that if insurance denied my claim (as they did), getting this fixed would become a major burden on me, possibly an impossible situation for me to handle given my complicated personal status. I got 3 quotes from 3 contractors, and Loyola Construction made the best first impression. But that is the problem I usually run into... the estimator may be a great person, so you hire them, but the contractors end up not being as great. For the first time ever, that ended up not being the case here.
The contractors were amazing. In the past, I have dealt with all kinds of problems, from contractors running the clock and trying to charge me for it, severely overcharging for materials and/or labor, taking forever to actually get the task done, and in the end, usually having done not such a great job. Cutting corners, being sloppy, and then looking at you like YOU are the problem when you point it out. I was looking forward to this project about as much as you would look forward to getting a cavity filled.
In the end, my holey floor resulted in the need for a bathroom gut job. The plywood and joists were water damaged and we were basically being held up by the vinyl flooring itself. I think I was operating in panic mode the entire time because I know that once you start ripping things out, 8,000 other problems could come up. Getting a loan to cover this job was nothing short of a miracle, so going over budget was not an option.
Despite my concerns, my experience with Loyola Construction ended up being the rainbow in the black cloud. My project description on Home Advisor is what got their attention right away and they managed to start construction immediately. The contractors were nothing like those I had dealt with in the past. Their work ethic was impressive... no breaks, no running the clock, no messing around... just solid work. Their word was very important to them, so if they said they would do something, they would do it. There were many times where problems came up and they could have pressed their advantage... but they were not like that at all. They were genuinely looking out for me and worked with me to resolve the problem without causing additional stress for me to suffer through. There were also things that came up that were not part of the original estimate, but just made sense to take care of them in the midst of a gut job if you want to do it right and be complete, and again, they worked with me through it all.
An unplanned-for completely new bathroom was not in the budget (like, ever) and my bank account is going to cry for many years, but that is not anyone's fault. Salt could have been rubbed in the wound if the contractors were like the ones I have dealt with in the past, but that just was not the case. Their work ethic and their empathy for my situation, as I said, was the rainbow in the black cloud, and approx. 1 week or so after my daughter put her foot through the floor, I now had an entirely new bathroom... and it was done right. New tub, shower, bath faucet, toilet, vanity, sink, sink faucet, medicine cabinet, (and additional) joists, plywood, flooring, plumbing, and for the first time, a completely level, SAFE floor in my bathroom.
I know everyone's situation and experiences are different, but here is my 2 cents. As someone who always gets the rotten end of the deal, trust me when I say that Loyola Construction is the company you want to hire. I have already told them that if / when I ever get more money, they are the ones I will be hiring to handle all of the other issues my 1950's house needs work on. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone in need of a contractor!!!"
