"Joe Marshall brought in some subcontractors: great guys, very experienced. When they came, the came to WORK, and they worked really hard and really well. Making over my garage will be a 3-phase job, and this was just Phase One: Dry wall, ceiling fan, and a waterline/sink into the projected bathroom. Great communication between them and me, great job, and I always knew what to expect. The garage looks good, all sheetrocked and the walls painted with trim, and they put a shut-off valve on the waterline, which is very convenient. They put in little details like that, very experienced, very professional."

"Totally happy with this experience! Miguel is a professional and nice to work with! I will hire him again!!! My project was small, I knew I needed a carpenter and had not had any luck finding one. Miguel’s crew knew what they were doing, were professional and efficient! This was a good experience!! We had an interior antique window installed in an opening in a wall. We also needed trim to close the gap under a new dishwasher. Both projects turned out great!!"

"We previously hired Sean to paint the interior of our garage. He did an amazing job. At that time we discussed him doing our Garage floor with epoxy and sparkles. We scheduled the job with him. He arrived on time and completed the work in the agreed time frame. He exceeded our expectations. Our garage looks so spectacular, that we are now the talk of the neighborhood."

"I hired Sanderling to install two 3 foot x 4 foot access doors to my storage area. The carpenters on-site were punctual and very easy to work with. Because of my experience with this company, I expect to hire them in the future to enclose my carport area and install a garage door."

"My wife and I are very pleased with the professionalism and the effort in which the garage door was installed. John and all the folks there at D.E.I. were helpful in all evolutions from selecting the door to the installation itself. We will definitely recommend your services to our neighbors and friends and have already been complimented a couple of times on how nice the door takes to the rest of the house. God bless and thank you again. James and Samantha Allen"

FAQs for garage and garage door service projects in Kill Devil Hills, NC

Enclosing a carport essentially turns it into a garage. You’ll start by framing and finishing exterior walls, then add a garage door (averaging $1,200), windows, and wiring for lights or outlets.

Plan for site prep and, if needed, a thicker slab to handle the added weight. Once the walls are up, insulation, drywall, and exterior siding create a secure, weather-tight space that protects vehicles and gear year-round.

A well-built carport may not add a huge dollar figure to an appraisal, but it can boost buyer appeal. Covered parking protects vehicles and lawn equipment, sharpens curb appeal, and fills what might otherwise be an empty driveway space. If the carport matches your home’s style and stays in good repair, it can make the property more attractive and competitive when you decide to sell.

Most cities and counties require a building permit for a new carport. Fees range from $60 to $800, depending on local codes and the size of the structure. Getting the permit upfront ensures the carport meets zoning rules and HOA guidelines, protecting you from fines or expensive retrofits later. Check with your building department—or ask your contractor—before ordering materials or scheduling installation.

A poured concrete slab is the gold standard for carport foundations. Concrete delivers superior load-bearing strength, keeps posts level, and resists shifting in freeze-thaw conditions. While gravel, dirt, or permeable pavers cost less upfront, they can’t match concrete’s long-term stability, especially if you might convert the carport into a garage later. Investing in a slab now can save money and hassle down the road.

Pre-made kits start at $300 and bundle all the required parts—sometimes installation, too—making them the most budget-friendly option. Custom carports cost more ($12 to $40 per square foot plus labor) but let you match the design, size, and finishes to your home.

If price and quick setup top your list, go with a kit. If you have a tricky layout or want a seamless aesthetic, investing in a custom build is worth the premium.
