"Bought a house 4 years ago that needed a pretty good amount of work. So glad we found Ivan! We worked with a great contractor in the past but when were suggested Ivan through word of mouth, we decided to at least get a quote with him. He came by on time, came into the house ready with covers on his shoe (thought that was respectful and courteous) and through the conversation about the project we knew he was knowledgeable and right for the job. We went with him over our usual contractor and we were definitely glad we did. At this point he's done many projects in the house and we never look anywhere else. The team showed up when they said they would and walked us through each step of the process as they progressed. We had a 630 SQ ft stamped concrete patio put in with a retaining sitting wall and additional landscaping. It was a big project but the team did their utmost to complete within the said timeframe which took about 2 weeks from start to finish. They left the area clean and tidied. "Bright Smart was very professional and timely. They explained the project in detail, gave me good advice, they did all the legwork for permits, etc. on time and gave me a very reasonable quote. The new service drop and enclosure look very high quality; the service panel and cable management they did inside is very organized and neat. They also took the time to figure out what devices were controlled by each circuit and labelled them all clearly. They explained what I could add with the extra space in the panel and the types of breakers I would need to purchase. They were quick and efficient with their work and professional. "On my initial call, Damian informed me that he was too busy to do my ramp project, but he directed me to the best way to proceed with my project; he specifically described the names of several prefab ramp companies he found using Google; I called him before placing an order on-line to run it by him, and he took the time to verify that it seemed reasonable; later, when I took measurements for my order, I realized that I made a major error; that an area where I had my garbage pails enclosed, was in the way; after I explained my error to the parts' service representative, my order was put on-hold and she asked for me to fax her a diagram (that included measurements); by that time, Damian told me that his job will probably be done, so that he would then be able to install the ramp; I felt more comfortable with Damian taking care of the diagram and measurements, and he came and told me the best way to complete the job, and took care of getting the information to customer service; he did not name a price for coming here to do this, and he seemed satisfied with the gratuity I gave him; the job was professionally done, with minimally opening of the deck at the stairs; the price was not discussed before or during the job, as I was willing to pay almost anything to allow for some mobility for my wife; when we settled up after the job was completed, I was given the necessary additional parts receipts for what he laid out, and his bill for labor was only slightly more than half of what I was prepared to pay; thank you so much Damian & Dan, excellent workers for a very fair price."

Leave exterior painting to the pros. Not only do you need to worry about the type and quality of the paint, you’ll also likely need a ladder and considerably more prep work. You’ll likely need additional equipment like ladders, scaffolding and possibly a paint sprayer. It’s almost cheaper to just hire a pro. Talk to a local exterior house painter about your project.
- Do your research. Understand what to expect and what to look for in a pro. Look at paint types, prices and costs.

- Call pros for site inspections and estimates. Always get three to five estimates.
- Check references, compare quotes, look at past work. After you have estimates in hand, do one final pass to compare the contractors.
- Sign a contract with the pro of your choice. You might need to make a down payment, usually 25% to 50% of the total project cost to cover material costs, but not all pros require this. Don’t pay for the entire project upfront.
- A complete inspection. Each pro takes a walk around your home to evaluate the condition of your current paint, the size of the job and any obstacles for accessing the site. They do this to see how much prep work they’ll need and estimate how long the job will take. The more thorough the inspection, the more accurate the quote.
- Color consultation. Expect each contractor to have varying color options and suggestions. However, you have the final say.
- Listen to the pro – they’re experts after all – but don’t get pushed into a color combination or finish type that you don’t want. Understand the different exterior paints or interior paint choices before your pro arrives.
- A rough estimate or complete quote. Finishing contractors vary here. Usually, they can quote straightforward projects on the spot. But some may need to take it back to their shop to run numbers and give you a detailed estimate with costs broken out. Neither method is better than the other, but just make sure to get multiple quotes.
- How long have you been in business? A long business history helps you avoid shoddy companies. It’s hard for a service business to stay in business if they don’t do good work.
- Are you licensed and insured? Not all states require a license for painting homes, but many do. Always use one that’s insured.
- Do you belong to any professional organizations? You’ll find many online, like the Painting Contractors Association or the Finishing Contractors Association?
- Do you have other work I can look at? Always check a portfolio or, in the case of painters, it’s better to look at work they did a few years ago to see how well it’s held up.
- How long will the job take? Get a rough estimate but get it in writing.
- How many people are in your crew? This is especially important if you work remotely. More people generally means more noise, but they’ll be done faster.
- Will I be in the way if I’m home during the painting? You usually won’t be in the way, but this question helps you understand what to expect while they’re working. They’ll need to lay down coverings and do a lot of prep work.
- Do you guarantee your work? Never hire a painter who doesn’t guarantee their work. This often means they’ll rush the prep work, since peeling never happens right away.
- What type of paint do you use, and how long is it rated to last? Different rooms need different paint and the exterior needs exterior paint. It comes in different grades with different guaranteed lifetimes.
- Can you supply a written estimate and contract? Never use a painter who isn’t willing to put his work in writing.
