"It was an excellent experience! Jeff Sellers met with me to discuss the job, assess exactly what needed to be done, and then provided a very detailed and competitive quote for the work that was needed. Marco led the painting team and he was outstanding! My husband is a perfectionist and the work was done impeccably. Jeff and Marco offered discounts to buy the paint that was needed and the clean-up after was also excellent. We met with several painters referred by Angi, but we are so happy that we decided on Merrifield Paint & Design. We highly recommend them and would be happy to supply a reference if ever needed. Highly, highly recommend!!!!"

Small jobs welcome

"Hutchinson Custom Painting took an urgent job for me and turned it around in a few days. The work was high quality and I passed the city inspection, so I can start looking for tenants. This is the second house that Hutchinson Custom Painting has painted for me and I plan on hiring them again."

"My experience has been excellent. Mendez Painting Services LLC painted the whole house outside. Replace a lot of wood that had rotted, restore all the ceilings, and paint it. Replace some of the wood in the windows that were broken and paint all the windows"

"Highly recommend D. Fuentes Painting contractors for your painting needs. They did an excellent job on my exterior house painting project. A family owned business that takes a lot of pride in their work. The job was bid at very competitive rates, performed on short notice, completed quickly with an appropriate sized crew, and any issues were resolved as requested. High quality Sherwin Williams paint was used and perfectly color matched. Edward Sanchez provided excellent communication throughout the entire process which I really appreciated."

"I highly recommend Emerald Painting. Roland was incredibly responsive and helpful with suggestions. His crew was professional, efficient, and skilled. We love the finished product - new exterior paint on a brick row house, repaired and painted concrete steps and porch, painted steel rail, and stained wooden deck. I will hire Roland and Emerald Painting for all similar future projects."

"Very professional from start to finish of job. Fine attention to detail for every aspect of the painting work. Prepared walls carefully before painting. Edges of painted area very sharp and no paint splatters etc. left areas clean. For curtain rod placement measured height to place and assured fell at correct length to the floor (which was not what the curtain package had specified in inches. Plumber did nice job with replacing toilet parts."

"Benjamin came today to paint my porch. Was through and professional as he sanded, primed and painted it. Was always pleasant and answered any questions I had. Did not leave a mess and costs were not excessive. Was able to complete job in a day with time between priming and painting. Would recommend him."

FAQs for painting projects in Washington, DC

Most homeowners opt for semi-gloss or high-gloss paint to make the baseboards stand out against the walls. If you’d rather keep things subtle, matching the wall sheen with eggshell or satin also works well. When your trim has nicks or dents, reach for a flatter, matte finish—it hides minor imperfections better than a shiny coat.

Stripping old paint from trim costs $1 to $3 per linear foot. Pros use specialized tools and techniques to lift away existing layers without gouging the wood, then prep the surface for a fresh finish. While it adds to your budget, proper removal protects the molding and sets the stage for a smoother, longer-lasting paint job.

Tackling the baseboards first often leads to crisper lines. Painting trim first lets you tape off the boards instead of the walls, so you’re less likely to splatter color where you don’t want it. Any stray marks on the wall get covered when you roll on the final coat, making the whole process faster and tidier.

You can absolutely paint baseboards in place. Leaving them installed avoids the risk of cracking or misaligning the boards when they’re reattached. With thorough cleaning, light sanding, and careful taping, a pro—or an experienced DIYer—can achieve a sharp, factory-smooth finish while saving you the hassle of prying off and reinstalling trim.

Painting almost always beats replacement in cost. Swapping out baseboards runs about $150 in DIY materials or roughly $1,100 with a pro, while repainting costs about $50 in supplies and $1 to $5 per square foot for labor. Unless the boards are warped or severely damaged, a fresh coat delivers the same visual upgrade for a fraction of the price.

Paintable caulk and wood filler are the go-to fixes for nail holes in baseboards. Wood filler sands flush for a glass-smooth surface, while caulk provides a flexible seal that won’t crack as the house settles. Either way, patching those tiny divots before you prime ensures your finished baseboards look seamless.
