"Scott came out to do the repairs. I had several plumbing issues and didn't expect to have them all completed the same day, but Scott managed to get them all done in one afternoon, including making s run for parts and a new disposal. He explained the cause of each issue and his planned fix before he went ahead. Most of of it ended up being relatively small repairs but I know some plumbers would have replaced rather than fixed to make more money. Very honest, good communication, reasonable pricing, skilled work - I will call them for all of my plumbing needs."

"This was a refurbishment of a commercial space. Herr Plumbing removed all plumbing in an used restroom so it could be torn out, and relocated/replaced a water heater. They located a toilet drain for a new restroom, and then completed the plumbing for that restroom when the framing was complete. They returned one more time to install all the fixtures. Herr Plumbing was timely and professional, and did great work!"

"Everyone I dealt with in this company was amazing. The schedulers were understanding and helped get someone to my house the same day. And they did! I got someone to come out soon after I called to open the block in my sewer line when two other plumbers couldn't do it. And they got a specialty tech out a couple hours later to camera my line and mark it outside for me. Both techs were fast, efficient, friendly and extremely patient with explaining things to me and making sure I had all the info I needed for the next step of work. The second tech took the time to explain his marks and how he wrote everything on the invoice for me so the next company I hired to replace my sewer line would have a reference. It made a really bad situation a lot less stressful."

"Tyler and Dave covered the carpets, wrapped the old water heater in plastic and removed it, re-did the plumbing as needed. Very professional team, friendly yet focused. We paid a small amount extra to have the desuperheater pipes (from the geothermal furnace) reconnected to the new water heater - definitely extra work for them and beyond the scope of a normal water heater swap. (The desuperheater uses cast-off heat from the geo cabinet to heat water stored in the water heater, cutting down on the work the water heater needs to do.) The work area was left clean. Kim (at the office) was also a great help in answering pre-install questions and getting the work scheduled. We will continue to use R&D for our plumbing needs."

"It was just some of the fixtures were kind of cheap that they brought like for the toilet lids, and we had a leak.  Overall, they were a good company, they were just not an A on some of the stuff."

"David was great to work with. We had a cracked toilet tank. I found a promotion for a new Toto Toilet from American Plumbing Supply through Angie's List. This was an old promotion but they honored it anyway. David came out the next morning and within an hour we had a new toilet! He was very courteous and even took the old toilet away. Everything was top notch. Will definitely use again."

FAQs for plumbing installation for a remodel or addition projects in Ames, IA

Adding bathroom plumbing to a detached garage starts with the basic line installation cost of $900 to $1,300. On top of this base expense, you'll need to budget for each fixture. A toilet costs  $250 to $550, sinks cost $150 to $800, and a shower or bathtub costs $400 to $1,900. The project will also require ventilation, moisture-resistant materials, and possibly electrical work. Remember that these costs reflect only the plumbing aspects—additional construction, finishing, and permitting expenses will apply to complete a functional bathroom space.

While certain aspects of garage renovation might be suitable for DIY enthusiasts, plumbing installation requires professional expertise. Connecting to water and sewer systems demands specialized knowledge and equipment, and improper installation can result in severe water damage, code violations, and potential health hazards. Most municipalities require permits for plumbing modifications, and these often stipulate that licensed professionals must perform work. Consider limiting your involvement to simpler tasks like painting or basic finishing work.

The timeframe for adding plumbing to a detached garage spans one to three days for the actual plumbing work. However, this represents only the active installation period. The complete project timeline must account for planning, obtaining permits (which can take weeks depending on your locality), coordinating multiple contractors if needed, and addressing any unexpected challenges that arise during installation. Weather conditions can also impact excavation and outdoor connection work.

Adding plumbing to a detached garage will likely increase your property taxes. Tax assessors consider plumbing an improvement that enhances property value and functionality. The specific tax impact varies by location and project scope. Converting a garage into living space with plumbing facilities can trigger significant reassessment in many jurisdictions. Before proceeding with your project, consult your local tax assessor's office to understand the potential tax implications and factor this ongoing expense into your decision-making process.
