"Having used Mad River Plumbing satisfactorily many times over the past 15 years, I was surprised to hear that the founder and long-time owner had sold the business a while back.  But there was no cause for concern: Mad River is still a great firm.  I was also a bit concerned at first when they wanted to charge me $40 for an estimate (which required a "house call" in order to get a sense of the existing set-up), but as soon as I demurred, they volunteered to waive it.   <br /> A courteous and competent young man came out within the hour, gave me a competitive bid, and was able to begin work as soon as I accepted.  He was efficient and professional (and, again, extremely courteous) throughout, worked efficiently, kept me posted as to his progress, and cleaned up after himself.  The only other slight surprise was that he needed immediate payment, as Mad River's office apparently is no longer set up to bill customers after the fact. <br /> A note on price:  when I say that the price was "fair," I mean that it was fair, relative to the two bids I received from other local plumbers.  All three bids seemed a bit high to me, given what the research I'd done on the internet (always a dodgy proposition, I know) had led me to expect.  But since they were all within $50 of one another, the only way to spend less money would have been to do the job myself--something I was not prepared to do.  Since Mad River had a good unit (a middle-of-the-road 50-gallon Rheem) in stock and could get me up and running again within a few hours, I was happy to let them do it. <br />"
