"Short-term and long-term radon tests in the basement yielded readings of 5.6 and 5.1. Steve Daigle did an initial inspection and developed a sub-slab depressurization system to reduce the high radon level in the soil beneath the basement. The price for the system was fair - around the lower end of the averages. Steve did the work himself, except for the wiring of the fan motor to the house electrical system. The job took about 5 hours and went very smoothly. Three holes had to be made - one in the basement floor, one through the sill wall into the garage and one through the roof of the garage. All of the work was very clean and all debris was taken away. Steve was always checking to see if there were any questions before, during and after the installation and provided timely replies to any questions or issues. He also did the paperwork for the electrical permit. I was very pleased with Steve's work and the best part is that the post-mitigation radon test was a level of .5 - that's point five. <br />"

"Very nice to work with during the inspection, great tips, thorough. only thing that was not good, was the format of the inspection report delivered. it was very hard to follow/read, with a lot of redundant info, and odd organization to the items. the report was very frustrating to read and try to inventory and categorize lists of issues to bring to buyer as part of the related negotiation."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Prior to hiring Dunbar to work on our well water system, our new construction suffered from wildly fluctuating temperature (bursts of cold water while taking a shower.) The original plumber proved incapable of resolving the problem and two additional plumbers also were unable to discover the cause and/or arrive at a fix. Although the home was still covered by a one-year warranty, we decided that we would have to address the problem ourselves. After numerous observations, it was discovered that the burst of cold water was directly correllated with the well pump turning on. The municipality requires a sprinkler system and, in lieu of a tank, installed a higher capacity pump. Dunbar was recommended by Steve Beckwith of Beckwith Heating (provided review). They did experiments and informed us that (1) our water did NOT require any treatment; i.e., the analysis showed our well water was well within specs, but (2) they felt that they could reduce the iron and observed sediment (iron was at the high end of allowed range). Furthermore, they could not guarantee fixing the cold water burst problem, but were quite certain that adding a flow restrictor (demonstrated via manual shut-off valve that it should work) the bursts should be greatly reduced or even eliminated. They also had the option of exchanging flow reducer rates (first one worked great.) To handle the flow needed for the sprinkler system, they installed a pressure bypass valve. Bottom line, system works great - outstanding job."

"Dan performed air testing for Radon, and water testing for a wide variety of possible contaminants as part of pre-purchase building inspection. Responsiveness was fabulous, results were quick and very easy to understand, including very clear information on what the various EPA limits are for each item. The realtor said he's the best provider of this service he's ever seen, and he's been in the business for at least 10 years."

"Experience was excellent. Aaron performed the Home Inspection and Justin the Septic and Well inspection and tests. Both were extremely knowledgeable and took time to provide on-site comments and answer all my questions thoroughly and in detail. I also had a very short timeframe for completing and receiving the official reports according to my purchase agreement and they came through as promised. Both Aaron and Justin impressed upon me their willingness to be contacted for any follow up questions and Justin quickly responded to questions I had about the well water recovery test after I received the report. <br /> I would definitely recommend their services or use them again. <br />"

"The inspection went smoothly. Very helpful and answered all of our questions. Pointed out things to do/watch out for. Also showed us the heat loss areas of the building with the infrared camera. Would definitely recommend and hire again, but hoping that this house is the forever home this time :-) <br />"

"The job was to remove the mold that had formed near three disconnected vent pipes that passed through the attic and then to reconnect the pipes. They were prompt and remarkably tidy. Because they were dealing with mold spores they completely sealed off the room that gave them access to the attic. (Of course, because the room was sealed off while they worked and because I would have had to borrow a ladder to access the attic after they left, I have never actually laid eyes on the work they did! I believe that the work was done as promised.)"

"We had rather expensive water and air radon mitigation systems installed by this company in 2007, which we have been very satisfied with. We had them out to do the annual maintenance the first year after it was installed, and after getting the bill, my husband decided to change the filters himself after that, having observed the entire (rather straightforward) procedure. <br /> We recently noticed that the fan on the radon air had stopped working, and were told it needed to be replaced (they are warrantied only five years by the manufacturer). An appointment was scheduled for the following week, and the technician arrived almost an hour after the scheduled appointment time of 8:00. My husband missed work in order to be here when the guy showed up. When he arrived, he installed the fan, and we were charged $367, $125 for 30 minutes labor and $242 for the fan itself (which retails for $140 - I would imagine they didn't pay that much for it, given that they probably buy loads of them). That's a 70%+ mark up on parts. <br /> Very disappointed with the inflated labor charges, especially since we're only 35 minutes from their location. Even including drive time to and from our house, it still comes out to over $150/hour. We should have learned our lesson with the first over-inflated service call; we certainly do not intend to call them again to service the system in the future."

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Auburn, ME

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
