"I highly recommend Tom McCaffrey! The underground feeder to my house partially failed (one wire). Tom was fantastic - came on a Sunday to look over the job, provide me with a quote (I knew it was expensive - about 120 feet of underground). On Monday he came and hooked up a transfer switch so I could at least have part power to my house (and running water!) Because Tuesday was New Year's nothing happened. On Wednesday he show up on time with helpers. They really busted their tail - pulling the wires out was very tough. Turned out the 90 degree elbow below ground had failed, conduit was full of dirt, water and... acorns! Lots of critters here. By Wednesday afternoon National Grid made the final connections and we have our power restored. Very happy with the service and professionalism. I have other electrical work that needs to be done and plan on hiring him again!"

"Pros. Very professional and knowledgeable. Told me more about my electrical panel than any of the other 4 estimates I recieved. Cons. Told me the panel was at end of life. Panel is 22 years old. Life of panel is 25 to 40 years old. Breakers degrade over time( heat up, trip, overloaded) none of which i have. When panel installed there was NO leds and very few people knew about energy star ratings. All of my appliances in the house are high in energy efficiency. My base load was rates at 142 amps on 200 amp service well below the 20 percent threshold. These guys were by far the most expensive,"

"They were very professional. The estimate was free. They were knowledgeable. They provided fair quote and that is exactly what we were charged. There was trying to up charge the work or tell us it was more work or inflating the job.Just good honest business. They were very friendly at the job site."

"It only took Nick a half of a day to upgrade my whole panel and circuit breakers. He asked multiple questions on what I really needed and made suggestions on how to save a few bucks by not buying heavy duty equipment that wasn’t needed for my application. Take his business cards and hand them out. you and your friends and family will be very happy with his attention to detail and quality of work."

"If not for DC Electric fixing my pool motor, I would not have been able to lower the water in the pool in preparation for the additional inches of rainfall, thereby preventing possible flooding. Not only that, since I had Mr Cropanese here, he was able to address another electrical concern I had. Most happy with his work and will recommend him to others."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Belchertown, MA

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
