"Wonderful! JD Holm & Sons receive our highest recommendation and we are completely satisfied and impressed with the remodeling result. After obtaining several estimates and meeting a few contractors, we agreed to work with JD Holm after meeting Jay. He is extremely professional, efficient, and knowledgeable. JD Holm & Sons work to meet not only our expectations but also their own. We were provided with a realistic budget and timeline to perform professional painting of our entire home, creation of paneled walls, re-staining wood floors, enhancing staircase railings, refurbishing cabinets, performing tile work in the kitchen and living room, and installing new carpet and light fixtures. They are willing to work within your budget to provide options and alternatives. I would consider them perfectionists in a very positive way, and they strive to take into account the fine details of their projects. They take great pride in their work and it shows- you get what you pay for, and in our opinion, we are truly satisfied and relieved in working with JD Holm & Sons to improve our home. We definitely recommend their transparent and meticulous work."

"Jim is a great guy.  Very nice and personable.  He does good work, but in this instance I was looking for good work at a reasonable price.  It was in our storage room so it didn't need to be a great job where you might take extra time to make sure the job is first quality.  I had to remind him of that to speed him up.  The drywall work ended up costing me a little more than I would have liked, but it was done well, and it was done at last.  <br /> I also had him build a simple bookcase to handle our overflow of books.  It was in the storage room also.  Jim decided it would be easier for him to build it at his place and then bring it back and install it.  I thought that would be fine.  He finished the bookcase and brought it back to install it.  It was too tall to get into the storage room without dismantling the drop ceiling (for which he charged me).  I wanted a simple plywood bookcase with solid pine face frame, unfinished.  Approximately 4 feet wide by about 7 feet tall.  He did a good job, but it cost me over $600!  I was figuring it should be about $3-400.  Too much for what it is. <br /> Anyway, the lesson is, if you use Jim, get a quote for the job.  I paid him on an hourly basis because his rate was good and he seemed to know what he was doing.  He did do good work, he just took too long to do it, which means it ended up costing me more than I figured it should have. <br />"

"Great. Derek and his dad worked hard and did a wonderful job. They are both friendly and personable. They had to leave before they could finish a closet in one of the bedrooms so Derek said he would come back and complete the work.. Derek is a man of his word and did come back and finish the closet and clean up the waste and take it outside by my trash barrel. I would hire him again in a heartbeat as he works hard and is reasonably priced."

"The cabinets are just beautiful!!! Don the project coordinator measured all the cabinets took pictures, described how the prep work painting would done and provided a detailed estimate. Don came over a 2nd time provided samples of paint colors to have the ceramic paint tinted. Kevin and Joe did a beautiful job!!!. They took the time to protect my belongings and kept everything clean and tidy when they were done for the day. The project took 1 week. There were 28 doors and 12 drawers. They even put on the new hardware for me! All in all Kevin, Don and Joe were truly professional!!!"

"This is the second time I have used Personal Touch. I had them paint two bedrooms including closets and an additional ceiling. They were buisy and had to work me into their schedule so they did it on Saturday and Sunday. I gave them the wrong paint color and did not catch it until they had started but they corrected it with no cost increase to me. Anthony did an excellent job. He was on time, friendly, did an excellent job for a fair price, and finshed on time. You cannot ask for more. I highly recommend them and will use them again I am sure."

FAQs for cabinets reface projects in Berrien Springs, MI

Absolutely. Refacing returns 65% to 80% of your investment at resale, and you get an updated kitchen right now. Because you’re not paying for new boxes or demo work, the price lands well below complete replacement but still delivers a fresh, custom look that buyers—and you—notice every time you walk in.

To trim costs, start by pricing a high-quality paint or gel stain instead of full refacing—stain alone can be one-third the price of full refacing. Keep existing hinges and pulls if they’re in good shape, and shop sales for sandpaper, primer, and sealer. The sweat equity is real, but so are the savings, and a careful DIY job can still leave your cabinets looking sharp for years to come.

A professional crew needs only three to five days to reface a standard kitchen, although a larger layout or intricate door style may add one to two days. Compare that with the several weeks a full cabinet swap can drag on. In other words, you get your space back fast, often before the paint on the new doors is even fully cured.

Yes, you can replace just the cabinet doors and drawer fronts without covering the cabinet boxes. Cabinet refacing involves installing new doors and drawer fronts while applying veneers to existing cabinet boxes. If you’re satisfied with the condition of your cabinets, swapping doors and drawer fronts reduces labor and materials, saving you time and cost. Always consult a professional to confirm compatibility and ensure a seamless, high-quality finish.

Most cabinet refacing projects do not require removing countertops because professionals can access doors and drawers around existing surfaces. However, if your countertop overhang prevents full access to the cabinet boxes, contractors may need to lift the countertop to install veneers properly temporarily. Discuss this with your refacing specialist during the on-site estimate so you know exactly what the project entails.
