"We have problems with one of the burners on our gas GE cooktop and have decided to purchase an electric model. Both Home Depot and Angi helped us in our search for an electrician. Happily, we found Zack Nelson of Nelson Electric in nearby Vacaville. He promptly arrived, checked our electric panel, cabinets above and under our cooktop, and attic for running new electric wiring from the garage panel to the kitchen. A previous estimate led us to believe this wish to change from gas to electric was more than we wanted to pay. Zack has a "can do" attitude, and his price was much lower. Within days, Zack and his crew member Westley completed the following: replacement of two breakers in our sub panel to make room for the new 40 amp breaker and installed a 40 amp 240 volt circuit to the cabinet under the cooktop. This was done within a couple of hours and they cleaned up completely before they left. We are now ready to purchase and have our new electric cooktop installed. We are totally satisfied and want to share our successful electrician search with all of you. Zach Nelson (707) 474-2884 ZACK@ZACKNELSONELECTRIC.COM (CA LIC #: 1074873). Through the Inflation Reduction Act there are credits and deductions for changing from gas to electric, including oven ranges, hot water heaters and furnaces. So far, no help in changing out cooktops. Jack and Linda Clark"

"Robert from Buzz Electric did a very good job of installing light fixtures and replacing light fan in the bathroom. He removed the rusted old fan carefully using electric saw. It took good amount of time but work quality was great. I will recommend Buzz Electric for anyone who needs large or small work done in their home or office."

"I am super thrilled with my new electric gate. Don was able to reuse a solar panel that I had to make this automatic gate run on solar power. I highly recommend him for all your electrical needs. So far he has upgraded my electrical panel from a 100 to a 200, installed solar lights and camera, installed a new ceiling fan and new motion sensing lights in my barn."

"We were very lucky to find Emrom Electric and Emmanuel Mbisse. Our 100+ year old house in Berkeley needed complete rewiring after a short circuit and inspection. Emrom was able to start this huge job within a week or two, saving us a lot of money in tenants' dislocation expenses. Emmanuel was a pleasure to work with, providing explanations and giving us options along the way. He got the job done faster than we had hoped in a good, professional manner for a fair price. We would recommend Emrom to anyone and will definitely be contacting them for any future electrical work."

"I had Proper Power Electric come out to replace some old switches and put in a new ceiling fan in my dining room. Foster was the electrician who did the work, and he did an awesome job. FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Birds-Landing, CA

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
