"When Ty first came to meet with us and offer an estimate, we were very clear our house is 75 years old, and we were looking to work with someone experienced with wood paneled and plaster walls. We expressed that we knew the walls and trim would not look brand new and would not be perfect, but that we would like everything to be sanded, smoothed, and patched as best as possible. We also clearly stated that we would like all interior doors painted. Ty seemed knowledgeable and had great reviews, so we hired him. He quoted us $3400 for labor plus the cost of the paint we would buy ourselves. And it was to include all rooms of the house, trims, frames, and doors. Ty arrived on Monday December 8 to begin work. At the end of the dayhe only worked 4.5 hours totalhe told me he forgot to include doors in his quote and that hed work with us on adding them. (We could not have been more clear on including these and therefore believed his quoted price included them). There were several areas on the walls that did not like they had been properly sanded. I pointed these out to Ty and he said he would address them the next day. Tuesday he came to work while we were not home. Again, he only worked for 4 1/2 hours. When I came home, he had improved the areas I had pointed out, but there were more areas that had clearly been missed, and it was starting to become clear Ty was giving no attention to detail. For the second day in a row, he left the house messy, and I had to thoroughly vacuum and scrape several paint drips off the hardwood floors and windows. On the third day, Ty had not even finished two rooms. He started to become passive aggressive towards me when I would inquire about some of the areas that simply did not look good. He let it be known that most painters would be charging me extra for a third coat and that he should start asking his clients if theyre going to be OCD about things. I will say agin that I was simply looking for a job done well. I had no expectations of my 75 year old house looking brand new. Ty left after 5 hrs and again I spent the evening scraping up dripped paint. Now that Ty was starting the trim, I could see that he was not using tape on anything to ensure clean lines. On day 4, my boyfriend came back from his work trip and seeing Tys work in person, spoke with him to see what could be improved. Ty started to passive aggressively tell him the same thing he told me, that most painters would be charging for a third coat, etc. But then most disturbingly, while I was standing right there, Ty began addressing me in third person to my boyfriend. He said he didnt wanna change the womans colors insinuating that he suspected my color choice would take three coats to get coverage but didnt want to disclose that upfront. He then told my boyfriend, again while I was right there, in my own house that he only does so much business with the wifethats why I was waiting for you to get home so we could talk business. We were beside ourselves with this blatant display of misogyny. Between this and the lazily executed work, we told Ty we would pay him for the two rooms that took him four days to finish (the entire house was supposed to be done in five days), and that he could leave. After Ty left, we were able to take a closer look at the work. The baseboards looked worse than before Ty started. It was clear he took no measures to sand them. He did not tape the floors, and there are smudges of paint all around the borders. When we went to open, adore to one of the rooms, a 3 inch chip of paint peeled right off the frame and onto the door (a door that had not been painted). In addition to having to scrub paint off the floor, I had to go in with a paintbrush myself in touch up certain areas. But some are so bad we will need to hire another professional to fix them, and to finish the remainder of the house. Before Ty left, we cut him a check for $1475. Which was the total cost of the two bedrooms he had quoted. The next morning, we sent Ty pictures of our findings and called him to see what could be done to remedy his poor workmanship. He was extremely hostile, accused us of being cheap and impossible to please, and accused my boyfriend of threatening him. Which I can assure you, he did not. Ty said a refund was not gonna happen and hung up on us. Frankly, at this point we feel unsafe this man has our address."
