"Tim was great to work with. Kept me informed of the work time table during a very busy time. He and the crew were there when promised. Tim made improvement suggestions when replacing the original flashing and exceeded code standards when he replaced the ice and water shield. He was very helpful explaining the various shingle options so I could select the best product for my application. He kept in contact with me during the whole process to insure all my questions were answered and to insure I was satisfied with the work. His price was very competitive. Tim knows roofing and his crew knows how to install them. I am a very particular person and even with that even I was impressed. You will be pleased working with Tim and also pleased with the work his crew does."

"Great. Neil's crew did a fantastic job. They worked quickly and you could tell they were confident in their work. We had used DeWit Construction several years ago at another home (this was before the roofing section became it's own entity) to put on a new roof after damaged during high wind/hail storm and also to rebuild the underside of an upper deck which had not been correctly supported. We are already considering them for another project."

"Had a water leaking through my roof from Ice dams and damage on whole wall on the west side of my living room.  They had to replace all dry wall, insulation and match the half of my ceiling to the other half that was not damaged.  Also replace a huge 1960 window with 3 new energy  windows.   Great work you would never know that the half of the room had been redone match all the paint and knock down on the ceiling to a tee.  Very knowledgeable, professional and kept me updated on all the process that was going on."

"After a few misunderstandings from the company who provided the cabinets. They were able to complete the cabinet installation. The price was reasonable compared to other companies. I’m very happy with the quality of installation."

"Kian showed up to give an estimate on placing Christmas lights along our roof line. He took the time to pick up needed supplies and even sent a picture of the items from the store to make sure we approved them. He showed up as promised and worked non-stop until the project was done. Kian was very personable and pleasant. We would not hesitate to hire him for future projects"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Carlisle, IA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
