"Taseer arrived on time ready for the job. He consulted on placement of bars and discussed the pros and cons. Taseer replaced a light fixture and, again, confirmed a placement that worked well in a small powder room. Would work with him again."

"Lucky was thorough and responsive, worked with us to understand the big picture and we are very happy with the end result. He was flexible with us as the scope of our work changed, and his subcontractors were great. He did stair railings and bannisters, sink vanity replacement, and various handyman repairs."

"The handyman, Paul, was punctual, professional and did quality work. He replaced the small section of my wood soffit that had water damage with new wood, painted it and caulked. He cleaned up the area when he was done. Paul also re-secured several of my window shutters that had loose screws. He spray painted the screw caps to match the color of my shutters."

My name is Gabriel Taylor. I attended Colombia College with a Bachelor of Arts. Upon graduation, i entered the advertising world fabricating models and props for t.v. and print ads. My knowledge of tools expanded greatly. Having always been handy, this fine tuning of shop skills led me to realize that there's much more job availability in home repair/ remodeling/ etc. Now, with 25 years of experience under my thumb, there is little that i haven't come across in the world of trade work. From electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, locksmithing, tile, etc., i always deliver quality results with a strong artistic awareness and touch. Caring for the customers wants and needs is primary. I believe in giving them exactly what i would want in a skilled worker in my home. Kindness, honesty, cleanliness, reliability, and quality results.

"My wife and I needed additional railings in our house given recent mobility issues and Martin Hardwood Flooring did an amazing job.  Guests frequently comment how beautiful the railings look and how well it matches previously existing railings.  Martin Hardwood Flooring was first to call to look at the job and first to bid.  The work was begun very soon after we accepted the bid and was completed in a single long day.  The effort, time and craftsmanship was impressive to witness.  In addition, the price was more than fair for the quality supplies and hours worked on our project.

We quickly asked Martin Hardwood Flooring to work on a second job, creating smoother transitions between hardwood flooring and tile flooring in our kitchen and bathrooms.  As before, the work was done in a very timely basis with great skill and yielded a beautiful result.  The effort and diligence of the workers was impressive.  The workers were very polite and careful not to make a mess.

I will use Martin Hardwood Flooring for all future projects and want to recommend Martin Hardwood Flooring to everyone with a hardwood flooring house project.  The modifications to our home were very important to my wife and I and we feel so fortunate that the projects were completed with such care and skill.

"Great from start to finish. I contacted them via email and they asked me to send pictures of the stairs that we wanted completed. He sent me a quote which was extremely fair. They scheduled the work for several weeks out and were able to deliver on that timeline. The guy that did the work was very skilled, but also very clean and neat. He went to great lengths to ensure that each day the work area was cleaned up and vacuumed of most dust. The stairs came out beautiful and we're very happy."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Chicago, IL

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
