"Working with Thomas was a pleasure. He assessed my existing electrical panel and offered his advice. There was no pressure. I elected to have my breaker panel upgraded to 200 amp service with whole-house surge protection. The price was reasonable. The crew showed up on time and worked diligently to completion. They were respectful of my home, and exercised appropriate social distancing. I would definitely hire them again. The County inspector was not making house calls during the Covid-19 outbreak. So Thomas made another visit to complete a remote video inspection, without complaint."

"John came in and hooked up the wires, added switches for the recessed lights in the kitchen. He even prewired for an island hood vent... another project of mine later down the road. He did the work quickly and cleaned up well. I would use them again for another electrical projects in the near future."

"Called and made appointment. Steve and Dave arrived within the 2 hour window. I was not sure if the fans needed replacing or just the thermostat. They went right to work, diagnosed the problem, explained what was needed and replaced the thermostat. When asked if anything else was needed, I asked them to wire the smoke detector and check the GFI which also needed replacing. Both Steve and Dave were very pleasant, honest and efficient. The cost was reasonable and I will use their service again."

This generator was installed on the side of a house. The window had to be replaced to allow for the generator to be placed in this location. The window was made to not open per code.
We installed this 14kW generator to power the whole house. We used load shed modules to be able to save the customer money by using a smaller generator than would have been needed if we didn't use the load shed modules.

"On June 10, I had a company to install security equipment in my home. In doing so, the installer drilled through a wire and I did not have electricity in several outlets due to the damage. Since the company did not have an electrician on staff and was unable to refer me to anyone, I turned to Angie’s List for help in finding someone to correct the problem. I called Hands on Electric on June 11 and spoke to the owner, Kevin Williams. I explained my problem to Mr. Williams and he gave me a window of time in which he would be able to come out. Not only was he able to come out the same day that I called, but Mr. Williams was able to come much earlier than expected. Once he arrived he was able to trouble shoot and diagnose the problem. Mr. Williams was very, very friendly, professional and honest. He was able to answer my husband’s questions and explained what he was doing as he made the repairs. My husband was very happy about that and we were both impressed by the years of experience Mr. Williams had for his age. I have been looking for an electrician for a while now and have decided that I will be using Hands on Electric for all of my future projects. I was very pleased with the work that was done by Mr. Williams and will recommend him to my friends and family when they need of electrical services."

"How did it go? Not well. I finally just bought the required ladder at 200 USD and did not pursue Kolb Electric further. I should have just bought the ladder in the first place. Live and learn."

"My wife and I hired a previous electrician to make electrical repairs on our rental property that was under contract. Needless to say the job was not done correctly and not to the local code. Once the electrical company determined a valid permit was not filed for the work on the property, they pulled the meter to protect their equipment. A few days later, the local area experienced a tropical storm that proceeded up the coast which flooded our basement due to no power at our sump pumps. We were informed by the buyer's agent when they dropped by the property to check the electrical work. Our current electrician did not effectively communicate with plan check and our electric company. We quickly fired our current electrician and looked for an experienced electrician familiar with the local code. Most of the electricians we called were busy for the next several weeks. I had used Home Advisor before and experienced solid success. C.E. Harris was recommended for the electrical work we needed to have completed. I quickly called Chuck and he immediately returned my phone call. I explained our current scenario and nightmare at our rental property. Chuck had heard of a similar occurrence in one of the local counties. Chuck talked me through what needed to happen and set my mind at ease. Chuck was at the property the following day and I had an estimate of the required work within 24 hours. Chuck explained everything that had to be accomplished in order for the county to pass the service and final inspections. His knowledge was evident as he expertly walked me through the estimate. Although I had to re-accomplish work that had already been performed by the prior electrician, Chuck was on the job the next day and kept me updated on the work being performed. Chuck is a knowledgeable professional that took care of the current and existing electrical issues. Chuck also corrected other minor issues without charging anything in addition. We passed both inspections with no issues and the buyers were able to move into their new home. Chuck from C.E. Harris did an outstanding job surpassing both my wife's and my expectations. I will always call Chuck for future electrical work. I highly recommend Chuck for any type of home electrical work in Southern Maryland. Outstanding, quick and professional service. A++"

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Dowell, MD

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
