"Working with BRT on our home inspection and radon test was incredibly easy and very competitively priced. Dave was very easy to get a hold of and was able to schedule us quickly. He is very knowledgeable about homes and construction in general. He not only showed me certain issues with the house but also explained which items I could fix myself and where to buy the parts. He differentiated the items that couldn't be "DIY-ed" and offered to provide (didn't push) contacts for these items. The best value with BRT is the fact that they can couple a radon test with their home inspection. Most home inspectors sub-contract their radon tests with different companies. This not only adds time to your inspection (cutting into your inspection review period) but also costs a lot more money (I quoted 5 different home inspectors and BRT was the most competitive). To top it all off, Dave is a personable guy who is very easy to get along with and has plenty of experiences to share. I would highly recommend Dave and BRT to anyone getting a home inspection (especially if you're getting a radon test too)."

"A++ service. Mike performed an excellent job testing a house we are in the process of purchasing in addition to the Radon testing. We found him to be personable, straight forward, detailed, honest and informative. Each area of concern, Mike provided clear details for the rating given which included pictures with arrows pointing to the exact location. Overall process went smoothly. Would gladly hire again in the future and/or provide as a reference."

"Ron was very responsive and was able to get the equipment delivered and installed with short notice. He engaged us in some conversation and clearly loves what he does. His associate returned 48 hours later to retrieve the machines and Ron called us the following day for payment and to provide the results. Our home tested in the 4-6 picocurie range which is above the action level of 4. Ron emailed detail results which showed the measurement by hour and by location, information about radon, and information about remediation (including referrals to local providers). He also included information regarding the legal aspects of radon as it relates to testers and remediators. Definitely recommended. This guy lives to do radon testing!"

"We needed inspection on a single-family ranch home built in 1970 at around 1600 sq ft. Mike is very thorough and does a great job of explaining things as he goes. He looks at every aspect, from top to bottom, and isn't afraid to get a little dirty. His turnaround time is very quick. We received the inspection report early the following morning, even though our inspection occurred late afternoon the previous day. He takes his time to address any questions. We also got a Radon inspection done. This wasn't done by Mike, but he essentially hired another certified company out and relayed the cost to us."

"I called Jeff Lisse specifically after being strongly referred from a family member. They have had Jeff do home inspections for them for years and know I know why. He was extremely thorough during the entire inspection, he went into tough spots and went out of his way to find every nook of the house. Not to mention he very easy going and a funny guy. He made this experience smooth and painless. the house he inspected, had a long list of issues, flood issues, roof issues, mold, foundation and sinking issues. He found all of them explained them to me and saved me from this house. I will use him for all future inspection until we find the perfect house. I highly recommend him for all future inspection work, you will not be disappointed."

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Elburn, IL

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
