"The team from Maintain that Drain was professional and friendly. I appreciate that they took extra time to thoroughly explain their work and even give some helpful suggestions for other issues in the house. The thing that I was most impressed with is careful they were in my home and how beautifully they cleaned up after the work was finished. I will definitely be using Maintain that Drain from now on for any plumbing issues!"

"I'm not fully moved into the home yet, but I will update when I am there permanently. The crew was very professional, worked diligently, cleaned up after every day of work (three day job--french drain expansion, two additional sump pumps installed, window drains into the sump pumps, pretty extensive job)."

"Derrick showed up on time and was very professional. I have used his services twice now. Once for an inspection of a leak in one of my rental properties and the other for a dishwasher install. I would recommend again. Friendly and professional service at a reasonable price. Highly recommend Wallace Plumbing and Derrick Wallace"

"Woke to realize that our sump pump failed during the night and water was quickly accumulating from the ongoing rain. Rema was the first to respond to my HomeAdvisor message. He was at our house with all of the required pieces and parts within the hour and had the sump pump replaced and most of the water drained within another hour. He was quick, courteous, professional and the cost for the repairs very reasonable. He was also helpful in making recommendations on restoration support needed. I highly recommend Rema."

"Great experience. Tawn was excellent - he knew what he was doing, got the sump pump removed, cleaned out the sump, repaired a pipe, then installed a new pump. Very happy, will definitely call Tawn back for any future plumbing needs!"

Small jobs welcome

"it went very well.... this was a straight forward project... install a sump pump in the crawl space, (I had already pulled the old one). When they showed up they were right on time and they were conscientious of my floors (they used disposable shoe covers), they added a "one-way" valve to the drain pipe and the sump pump in quick order, had all the parts they needed on the truck and were done within an hour. When I called to request the appointment the woman that answered was able to schedule me for the next day... The price was fair and the sump pump they installed was (according to Amazon) top notch! I'd hire them back in a second."

"Thomas Reamer and Ramon Goard installed a sump pump and drain line and reinforced the waterproofing material. Very thorough in explaining the problem, solution, and showing us pictures of the process throughout. They worked steadily through rain and heat. Very impressed with them and their work."

"Excellent job, Ken Walters gave a competitive price and provided four models to choose from with varying levels of efficiency and options. The team that did the installation (sorry, forgot their names) were very professional, showed up on time, were very conscious of cleanliness, and installed a working heat pump in the coldest day of the year."

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in Ellicott City, MD

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
