Because the lamp had a built in dimmer in the middle of an extremely thin, six foot tall stem, if I wanted a dimmer he would have to install a floor dimmer. Because the lamp is plugged into an outlet controlled by a wall switch and I never use the dimmer, he was able to disconnect the built-in dimmer and just rewire the lamp.
