"JD Hostetter couldn't have done a better job for us all around. Owner Tom P came out and walked through our needs with us, and helped us make decisions where we were unsure and gave us a detailed estimate within a couple days (including some great visuals that really helped my wife, who isn't a particularly visual thinker). Once we settled on the work to be done, there were three separate crews doing work at different times. All were absolutely top-notch for professionalism and quality of work. The roofing crew put in one day that was over 18 hours long to keep things on track, and had maybe the best attitude I've ever seen for such a grueling job. We couldn't be happier with the results. Every nitpick or concern we had was handled quickly and professionally. Maybe the most impressive part is that over the course of the entire job - which included completely new roofing and siding on a 3000+ s.ft. home plus a 24x30 outbuilding - there we never ONCE a 'surprise' cost change. The estimates we got were exactly what we ended up charged for, and when we asked for changes, the shift in costs was made totally clear up front. Estimating is tricky, and I know how hard it can be to predict what may come up, so this fact impressed us greatly. JDH was not the least expensive estimate we got when we were planning this work - but their reputation on both Angies List and Hardie's Elite Preferred contractor referrals convinced us they were worth the slight cost difference. In hindsight, we couldn't have been more right. In 20+ years as a homeowner, JD Hostetter stands out as clearly the best experience we've had contracting for work on our home. This was a very large job, and we'll be living with the results for 30+ years, so feeling so confident in the results is a huge plus for us. We truly could not imagine a better experience, or recommend a contractor more highly than JDH. From beginning to end, no surprises whatsoever. The results are spectacular, and exceeded our expectations. Hostetter place alone at the top of Angie's list in our area is well-earned, and we would use them again in a second."

"Eads Roofing did a great job. We had four companies give estimates. Although Eads was not the least expensive, they are the only ones who properly identified the problems causing wood to rot. Corey Casper, who managed the project, explained it clearly and spelled out the options. When it came time for the job, it was done quickly and with high quality. They did a great job matching the gutter color to our existing paint, and we're very happy with the quality of both the woodwork and the replacement gutters. The price was fair for the work done. Overall, we were very happy with Eads Roofing's work, and we'd hire them again."

"Blue Ladder was extremely responsive to our request for an estimate, working with our insurance carrier and timely completion of the job. We experienced a slight leak around roof venting shortly after the install and they were right there to handle it immediately. The roof looks great and we would definitely use them again!"

"After I called, they came out the next day to look at the project. It took a couple of days to get the estimate via e-mail. I accepted it immediately and they scheduled the project for Friday, but unfortunately had to reschedule for Monday because weather prevented them from finishing a previous job Friday morning. All in all, the project was done in less than two weeks from first call to actual completion. The price includes the cost of the door. Having them get it was a convenience, but their price was approximately $100 more than the cost of buying the same door at one of the big box stores, hence the slight downgrade on cost."

"All-American Restoration is hands-down the best company I have ever used for roofing. Brad is an amazing person and treats his customers with respect. We used him a few years ago to roof our house when we were selling it and found out in the inspection it had hail damage. The timing for the work was critical because were also moving to a new house and needed it done fast. His crew was out literally the next day and had it done the same day. We also used him to repair our existing roof due to some wind damage. He worked me in the schedule and fixed it before rain was expected. If it would have rained before the repair, it would have been catastrophic. His prices are very competitive. He is a good person and will treat you right! I HIGHLY recommend him."

"We were given complete information and written material about what would be done. The crew was efficient and careful in removing old shingles, putting on new shingles and cleaning up afterward. AJ's were also recommended by our insurance claims adjuster."

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Franklin, IN

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
