"<p>I contacted American Sliding Door to install pet doors in my sliding glass door and in the screen door for the slider.  I was so happy to have a local provider (I like to support the local businesses if possible).</p> <p>I knew I was going to have to replace the glass on the sliding door in order to have the pet door through the glass.  I found the price very reasonable  considering the glass replacement, screen door, and pet door hardware.  They are excellent quality pet doors.  </p> <p>The pet door in the slider comes with two flaps, one inside and outside the glass, this keeps the door insulated.  There are also magnets that hold the pet door closed from wind or airflow.  If you need to remove any of the magnets or flaps to help during the training of your pet, it is fairly easy with this pet door.</p> <p>Despite already having a screen door, the entire screen door needed to be replaced to accommodate the pet door hardware in the screen.  I find the quality of the new screen door much better than the original so I found the additional cost in the screen door to be worth it.</p> <p>The workers were extremely professional.  They offered to install the door shortly after everything arrived in their shop.  Everything came out perfect.  They took there time to make sure we were going to be happy with the end product.</p> <br />"

"Could, and should have been better. <br /> Subcontractors: <br /> HVAC--Placer Heating and Air <br /> Insulation--Gold Star <br /> Windows--mostly in-house. <br /> Lessons learned: <br />  1. Put everything in writing--no verbals or phone call contractual or post-contractual agreements. Use email for documentation after the contract is signed.  <br /> 2. Hold back final monies until all work is done.  <br /> 3. Do not rush the work or allow the contractor to rush the work.  <br /> 4. If it's in the contract, insist on it and withhold payment until it's done. <br /> 5. All parts are the contractor's responsibility. <br /> 6. Inspect all work before the next phase, distribute a punch list, and don't approve and/or pay until you are satisfied. <br /> 7. Ignore suggestions that faulty equipment is due to the customer's lack of understanding. Contact the manufacturer if something doesn't seem right. <br /> 8. Insist on good quality finish work. <br /> 9. Insist that all materials be as specified in the contract or standard (check the standards when in doubt). <br /> 10. Be wary of companies that subcontract HVAC. <br /> 11. Make sure all work is permitted; read permits carefully; flag errors. <br /> 12. Check model and serial numbers in contract with manufacturer's website to ensure the grade/series you are paying for is physically the same. <br /> <strong>July 7-9</strong> <br /> Contract was signed on June 25, 2015. Work started July 7 and continued for three days total. Old HVAC equipment was removed, ducts removed, some insulation removed, new HVAC equipment installed, new thermostat installed. Insulation removal said to be complete. <br /> Problems: <br /> ?Subcontractors both stated that insulation was completely removed when it was not (twice). <br /> ?HVAC sub and contractor implied homeowner was incapable of operating new wifi thermostat. Three wifi thermostats malfunctioned, leading homeowner to contact manufacturer's rep to resolve the problem. They advised another thermostat that did not read the wall temperature rather than the air temperature. <br /> ?Apprentice attempted to obtain side work replacing air registers. <br /> ?HVAC sub tried to get homeowner to buy control parts for whole house fan installation. <br /> ?HVAC sub dragged feet and stalled on doing contractual work on water heater. Did not meet SMUD HPP specifications. Rebate not available. Contractor offers to refund the difference. <br /> ?HVAC and window work passed inspection, but whole house fan was never permitted. Contractor pulled the permit, provided hard copy, inspector reinspected on 9/30/15. <br /> <strong>SMUD rebate preparation<br /> </strong>Contractor prepares JRT (job reporting template) for SMUD HPP and sends to homeowner for review. (9/18) <br /> Contractor prepares SMUD rebate application for homeowner (9/24) <br /> Problems: <br /> Some calculations incorrect on the JRT. Contractor resolved. <br /> Some rebates changed in the four months the contract work spanned. Contractor made up differences. <br /> <strong>Final Payment<br /> </strong>Homeowner made final payment on 9/30/15. <br /> <strong>SMUD rebate receipt<br /> </strong>Homeowner receives rebate check from SMUD on 11/5/15. <br /> Problems: <br /> Total $150 short of JRT. Inquiries with SMUD revealed that contractor revised JRT after last version was sent to homeowner. The latest JRT did not include the whole house fan in the project. Homeowner not informed. SMUD made arrangements to rebate the whole house fan. <br /> Takeaways: <br /> Sales rep made a good professional, technical, and personal impression without hard sell or scare tactics. One issue with verbal agreement. Scheduler at the contractor very responsive, efficient, and flexible. HVAC sub skilled, but sometimes unreliable and choice of apprentices unwise--made a bad impression of the company. Window snafu annoying.  <br /> Too much homeowner time spent on this contract: over ten days of visits, two no-shows, two code inspections, one test out. Too many emails to count. Final rebate prep never shared with homeowner. Test out failed air leakage test. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"Two tension springs replaced with new 10,000 cycle ones. The work took 60 minutes from arrival to departure. No unexpected problems. One spring broke around 9am, and upon recommendation by a neighbor on recent work completed and quick research on Angie's List, I called Alcosta Overhead Door at 10am. Jack answered the call and scheduled a late afternoon, first available appointment, for the same day. Jack was reluctant to provide an estimate for spring(s) replacement. He said the technician will provide an estimate once he's on-site and takes a look at the spring. At 4:10pm, received call from Roger that he will be at the house in 30 minutes. Roger arrived and with a quick glance at the tension springs, quoted: $185 for labor, and $137 for each spring. What would you do, if your car had been stuck in the garage all day......and now, it's the end of the day? I was uneased with the pricing, but accepted it (had to leave for Santa Clara early the next morning). Roger was very knowledgeable on springs and garage repair and maintenance. He was focused on the repair and definitely, a man who loves his craft. Tips on Angie's List website advise to "head for the hills" if the cost of replacing garage door tension spring is north of $300. However, wasn't clear if for one or two springs. Outside of Angie's List, I found reference to the difference between replacing one and two springs should be around $50. Overall, the spring replacements were completed satisfactorily and the garage door is working. The same-day, late in the day work and single-sourced came at a cost premium. Lesson: consider only garage door repair shops willing to provide a quote over the phone."

"The owner , Daneil,  of Lock Genius was out of town but sent an affiiate ( who didn't work directly with him) over right away to assess our issue with door handle that would not work. The owner, Daniel was the nicest and most hard-working person I have probably ever dealt with for service/maintenance issues with our property or home. His affiliate charged $74 to assess issue and I waited a couple weeks for a call back to hear about what parts had been ordered and for a replacement but when I did not hear back I called Daniel and he went to work on it right away - the part was hard to obtain and he called may people to try to find a part but when he could not he figured out a way to use another part to work instead saving us  quite a bit of $ (replacement of door handle would have been $500-600 but in the end parts and labor by Daniel were only $174 more.) He even took a look at some othr things in our loft unit we were concerned about unrelated to the door/lock.  He was always so eager to help , kind and responsive by phone. I woudl highly recommend Daniel to anyone! <br />"
