"These folks really care about doing a good job. They would not leave until they were sure that my wife and I were 100% satisfied. They provided great value for the cost of the job. Craig and Tyler are great (and fun) to work with. I highly recommend there company to anyone."

"The work was completed as described. The people were all very nice, professional, on time each day, great clean up. I wanted to change 1990s fruitwood stained alder wood cabinet doors and boxes to painted white. Mark convinced me that painting was not a good idea d/t the problems, over time, that accompany paint. He was very nice, not pushy. I went with the "tune up" but wish I had gone with the paint. The cabinets do look "tuned up" They have a shine but just look like they have been washed down and a shine product applied. This is of course what was basically explained to me so the company did what they said they do. I guess my point is that if you have an older home, original brown stain to wood and want to "update" then you should either 1) Replace the cabinets (which I could not afford to do) or 2) go with your gut and get them painted because just "tuning up" is not going to make you happy. I wish I would have gone with the white painted look. It would have been about the same amount of money and I know I would have been happier. I just had 14 (6 panel doors) replaced and all existing window and baseboard trim for 3 bedrooms, 5 closet and 12ft hall, WHICH HAD THE SAME FRUITWOOD STAIN, done for $2600.00, price including painting everything white AND INSTALLING NEW DOORS. IT looks GREAT and I am so happy with it. Mark and his company did what they said they would do and there is no fault with them. I do think this is basically a good cleanse with a gloss top coating of KitchenFit proprietary product and significantly overpriced. BTW I had estimates of $2700.00 to 3500.00 for painting of the cabinets so price was not the deciding factor for me; it was the sales pitch. Kitchen Fit was just more convincing r/t longevity of the work product. Expensive lesson learned."

"My family and I needed to add on wheelchair assessable bathroom for my grandfather who was retired in the military. We went through the VA who referred us to use Custom Designs’ services. The process took longer than expected. Although the finished product looked beautiful inside, a year later there are foundational issues. We now have a big crack in the wall and the door they installed leading outside with a deck is no longer closing all the way. This imposes a risk of anyone trying to break in. We’ve called them several times and have gotten no response. When we did get a response someone said they would come and check it out and never showed. We are looking to take legal action and filing a complaint with the better Business Bureau. It has been months now and still no response. Please do your research before hiring them as contractors because the customer service and quality of work is very poor and frustrating."

FAQs for cabinets reface projects in Gloucester, VA

Absolutely. Refacing returns 65% to 80% of your investment at resale, and you get an updated kitchen right now. Because you’re not paying for new boxes or demo work, the price lands well below complete replacement but still delivers a fresh, custom look that buyers—and you—notice every time you walk in.

To trim costs, start by pricing a high-quality paint or gel stain instead of full refacing—stain alone can be one-third the price of full refacing. Keep existing hinges and pulls if they’re in good shape, and shop sales for sandpaper, primer, and sealer. The sweat equity is real, but so are the savings, and a careful DIY job can still leave your cabinets looking sharp for years to come.

A professional crew needs only three to five days to reface a standard kitchen, although a larger layout or intricate door style may add one to two days. Compare that with the several weeks a full cabinet swap can drag on. In other words, you get your space back fast, often before the paint on the new doors is even fully cured.

Yes, you can replace just the cabinet doors and drawer fronts without covering the cabinet boxes. Cabinet refacing involves installing new doors and drawer fronts while applying veneers to existing cabinet boxes. If you’re satisfied with the condition of your cabinets, swapping doors and drawer fronts reduces labor and materials, saving you time and cost. Always consult a professional to confirm compatibility and ensure a seamless, high-quality finish.

Most cabinet refacing projects do not require removing countertops because professionals can access doors and drawers around existing surfaces. However, if your countertop overhang prevents full access to the cabinet boxes, contractors may need to lift the countertop to install veneers properly temporarily. Discuss this with your refacing specialist during the on-site estimate so you know exactly what the project entails.
