"Our existing system had been in the house 4 years and we had already had the fan replaced once. The previous company also used gutter pipe instead of PVC. We had Radon Experts come out to evaluate. Originally we were only going to replace the pipe since it was making so much noise that it was hard to sleep. Radon Experts told us that the type of fan that was being used was known for going bad and they recommended a different brand. It's been 3 months so far and no problem. They also replaced the pipe. They were quick efficient and very professional."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Wow... this home inspector did an amazing job. So much detail and thoroughness. He inspected inside and outside the home, and really took the time to explain everything to us. The inspection took 3+ hours, but it was worth it. <br /> He also said that if we ever have questions about ANYTHING related to the home or the home inspection, that we could call. <br /> Highly recommended! <br /> <br /> <br />"

"During home inspection on the house we are selling, radon tested above acceptable level. Commonwealth provided an estimate of work to be done and cost. They retested, determined it needed mitigation, drilled a neat hole in basement floor, installed pipe that led to outside, fan, arranged for electrician, retested, and provided report - levels very good."

"I had a sump pump system installed in the Spring of 2016. The installation went smoothly and the system was tested and worked fine. A few months later, prior to leaving on a vacation, I tested the system by filling the sump basin with water. Water sensor did not work and pump did not come on. I called B-Dry and they came out and installed a new sensor and switch. Installation now works fine. Very satisfied with the level of service from B-Dry."

"This company is the best in the business.  I contacted SWAT for a quote on install and had it within 5 minutes, over the phone.  They asked a few questions, assessed my needs and a few specifics regarding the home.  I scheduled the appointment for the next day.  Although they gave a two hour window, the technician showed up right at the beginning of the window.   <br /> He looked at all of the possible places to do the install and asked where I wanted it.  He made a few suggestions but I really wanted it where the sump pump was.  He said it would be difficult, but could be done.  He managed to squeeze into the small closet where the sump pump was and did a great job installing the mitigation system. It was freezing outside and much of the work had to be done outside.  The technician did not complain one single time of how could it was.  He did the work very professionally and talked me through his process the entire time. When it was all complete the technician asked if I liked how it looked and if it was to my standard.  I was in shock, no company has ever asked me that.   <br /> I found out that the tech had only been doing installs for about a year and a half.  It seemed as if he had been doing it for years.  This company has my highest recommendation regarding radon mitigation. <br />"

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Goochland, VA

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
