Small jobs welcome

"I appreciated the quick response when I was looking for drywall repair. However, the man they sent indicated right up front he really didn't know much about drywall and how to do it. While I appreciated his honesty, and he did a adequate job for me, I am quite disappointed that Mr. Handyman would send someone who didn't have experience in this area. For the cost ($150.00/hr) I would have expected someone with more experience. Bob, our workman, was very personable, a good worker, and for the smaller job that I had, did an acceptable job."

"They replaced the voltage regulator, ran some tests and felt the problem was more serious than the voltage regulator. The technician explained to us in order to determine the actual problem it could involve additional labor which could add up quickly and since the generator was 10 years old we might want to consider whether or not we wanted to invest money into more repairs or consider replacing the generator. We decided to get a quote from Vander Hyde for a new generator. While waiting for the quote for a new generator from Vander Hyde we decided to get a second opinion. We called Michigan Critical Power (MCP) and they came out to have a look. MCP wanted to start the diagnosis from scratch by checking the voltage regulator. Vander Hyde did not re-install the original voltage regulator. I contacted Vander Hyde and explained I was getting a second opinion and needed the original voltage regulator. They said I could come and get it if I wanted it. After the original voltage regulator was installed by MCP they determined the regulator was in fact bad. MCP installed a new voltage regulator, ran a few checks, made a couple adjustments and determined the generator was good to go. I have since ran the generator for two partial weekends to ensure satisfactory operation with no problems. It appears the second opinion saved me a lot of money.

"Extremely well. James was very professional. He answered questions via phone/e-mails quickly. His pricing was competitive. He even offered the solution to grout the gap left on the tiled floors after removing the old baseboards so that the new ones would sit level with the floor. No one else offered this solution. You still have to grout at the end because there will still be a gap because the tile is not level, but a lot less work due to the first step. Workmanship was great. He worked steady and was neat and clean. Finished my house in 2 days."

"Bob did a great job. Everything was nice and neat. Only small problem we had with him is the promise to be out to do the repair the following week, but heard nothing all week. We called him the following Monday and he explained that he had lost an employee and that he was very busy. Bob said he would be there on Friday in the afternoon. He did come late Friday afternoon and did the repair even continuing when it started raining. We are very pleased with Bob's Complete Construction."

"work was done ok on time etc. just found spots later that were missed, and windows were not clean due to overspray and lack of clean up.  I will take blame for not calling and complaining sooner, but just upset feeling it should have been done right the first time.

"I tried to change the door knobs by myself in our new home but wasn't able to line them up correctly. I gave Jim a call as a first time customer and he was here promptly to take care of it for me. He was very polite and reasonably priced. I will definitely be calling him for more jobs in the future."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Gowen, MI

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
