They called me back a few days before to make sure we'd still be home that day and to firm up a time.  Two men showed <br /> up on time and set up the equip. I saw no mess...but they spent several minutes cleaning the area around our fireplace anyway. <br />"

"It took a few weeks before they could schedule the install. They said they would try to save the marble around the old fireplace so that we could reuse it, but they couldn't guarantee that they would be able to do this. They were unsuccessful and cracked several pieces, and since we couldn't match it, we needed to replace the marble on the floor surrounding the fireplace as well. We understood that this might happen and were not upset. Other than this, the fireplace install seemed to go fine and was completed in a day. We are still using the fireplace a year later. <br /> <br /> Immediately after the install, the heat pump on our furnace quit working. The installers couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come back on. Thankfully, iIt is a dual fuel unit with natural gas backup, so we still had heat. The technicians who came out to do the install did not include Victor, who had given us the quote, but he came out himself to check on the situation. He discovered that when the technicians pulled the thermostat wire through to move it, they did not switch off the power, and so short circuited the lines and blew out the compressor on the heat pump. <br /> <br /> Initially, the Fireplace Shoppe's take on this was that the compressor was old (which was true) and likely to have gone out soon anyway, so they didn't want to take responsibility for the blown compressor. Our take was that it would still be working fine if the technicians had taken the necessary steps. <br /> <br /> It took a couple of days, but eventually they did what we felt was the right thing and agreed to replace the compressor at their expense. We've been in since and have never been treated badly in any way. I would still recommend them and use them again, but I would want to make sure that they sent their most knowledgeable technicians if anything out of the ordinary was going to be asked of them."

"I'm new to the area, relocated from California to Southwestern Missouri, so I did not know any good contractors. I have met and hired many contractors to rehab my fixer-upper home. Kevin is "hands down" the best contractor I've met. I would use him again and recommend him to others, without hesitation. Kevin showed up every day on time. His work area was so clean at the end of every work day that you could hardly tell he was at my home. He sent me pics of the updated work so I could see the progress, which I loved. He quoted a price and finished the work within budget. He clearly knows his trade and has experience estimating. He is a good collaborator. If I had ideas about how I wanted something to look or changes I wanted to make, he listened and gave feedback. He offered options and let me know why some of my ideas might not give the result I want or look right. Ultimately, he installed what I wanted how I wanted and even gave me ideas that I added to the scope of work. He removed an ugly, small retaining wall from each side of my basement entrance and replaced it with two beautiful retaining walls, with a French drain running along the high side. We ended up adding a few things to the original scope of work, including adding a lineal drain across the entrance landing and removing old poorly installed concrete slab with new concrete sloped away from the door to meet the new drain. Inside my basement he installed two brick walls. His rows are perfect. Everything is level and evenly spaced. In fact it's so perfect that I've had several people ask me if it's real! As for my retaining wall, if there's such a thing as a sexy retaining wall, I have one! I love it! Beautiful curve! With my I fireplace, hearth, and chimney, I had old brick from 1955 which is virtually impossible to match. Kevin helped me come up with ideas to make changes that complimented the mid century modern design of my home, without breaking my budget. He removed my old brick hearths that were improperly installed and framed in new hearths that would not be so heavy and would not need footings below the floor joists. He also installed brick and stone on my chimney to bring it up to code (at least 36" from a flammable surface). And installed the missing cap on my chimney. If I had the budget for it, I'd ask him to build me a firepit and two large piers on each side of my driveway entrance. Kevin is an artist. He takes pride in doing a job well. We went to 3 other reputable fireplace showrooms in Joplin MO and my husband and I were so confused by the "industry slang" that was used to describe our different options that we almost backed out of making any improvements. Then we visited Hometown Fireplaces & Stoves. The young man that runs that store (Travis) was SO positive and helpful. He came to our home that day and gave us a FREE estimate, something his competitors tried to charge us for! He explained the entire process from start to finish. He spoke in terms that were easy to relate to and to understand. He won us over with his professionalism and knowledge, but I must also point out that he beat his competitors prices by $800! With the information he gave us we decided to go with a Pellet insert and we are SO happy with our choice. When our insert was installed 1 week later, our furniture was covered with clean tarps, our fragile decorations were put safely out of harms way, and we were even invited to watch the process with explanations! We were so blown away by the knowledge and care that these young men gave in their work that we had them do our stone mantle and hearth as well. All thru the entire process they cleaned up after themselves and when everything was done my living room had never looked better! Now that we have been using our pellet insert for two months, we have reduced our monthly electric bill by nearly two hundred dollars a month! We expect those savings to continue into the summer because now that our fireplace is updated, our cold central air wont escape thru the chimney!
