"Right from the start everything went like "clockwork". Communications and scheduling were timely and accurate. Marsha kept us informed every step of the way. The estimate for the job was fair and reasonable and we signed on and scheduled the job. Showing up on time, communicating necessary information such as delivery of supplies and job scheduling are important. They followed through perfectly. The job was done in one day, the crew was professional, experienced and very clean. We are delighted with our new patio and we do not hesitate to recommend Exotic Pavers to anyone. So, do yourself a big favor, call them for an estimate...you'll be very glad you did!!"

"Dan Spears, of Mackinaw Landscaping, came out, measured, listened to what we wanted, and a few days later sent us a proposed landscape plan. When we signed the contract, he said it would be about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks before he could get to it, depending upon weather. I figured that would actually mean 3 1/2 to 4 weeks. It was 2 1/2 weeks. It took about 3 days to do, just as he said. The plantings were attractive, with lots of variety. He was pleasant to be around, and worked steadily."

"It started out well. They were originally very good with responding to emails and providing updates. The back was filled and leveled nicely, and on time (beginning of September). There were some areas torn up from the dump trucks, which was to be expected. The rolling and aeration didn't happen until the end of September, and still no grass seed at the beginning of October. I was told that the foreman didn't have the right seed on hand and would come back later to apply it. It was midway through October before they confirmed the seed had been put down, and by then a number of weeds and ryegrass had been established. I'm still facing some issues with my yard because of this, but it was never perfect to begin with. I will give them credit for doing a very good job for the area that was filled in, and they had the best price for the work done."

"They didn't inform me as to when they were going to get started, so just a heads up on that. They work on what they can when the weather allows. When I met with Brent, he was punctual and he listened to what I wanted to have done. He told me it would be a couple of days before he would be able to get back with me on the estimate. I was agreeable on the price considering what I needed to have done and how much work it needed. I had mentioned to him that I would like some pavers running along side the side walk that meets the driveway, however, when we spoke later about the estimate the pavers were not listed in the estimate. They promptly got back with me on a second estimate that included the pavers. However, the color I picked (black) was not a wise choice because the sun in the summer radiates more heat from the black and dries out the grass next to them quickly and needs to be watered more frequently. <br />  I mentioned to the guys that were doing the work, that I had told Brent that I wanted to do the complete island in front of our house including the part that is on the other side of the property line because if I didn't the area that wasn't resodded, any weeds that were there, would invade the new sod. Besides the fact that it was a small portion anyway. He didn't relay this information to the guys. <br /> Brent had given me an estimate for 2500 sq ft of sod. I don't know if it was because of the missed information mentioned above or if he under estimated (even though he took measurements when we intially spoke). Some how they didn't have enough sod to finish the job. I was told to water what I had and they would be back on Monday morning to lay the rest of the sod. That night it poured buckets of rain. I thought that my sod would be floating down the street. It survived. However, the area that didn't have sod wasn't so fortunate. A good part of the dirt had been washed away. I figured that with the dirt on the sod that they still need to install, that it wouldn't be that big of a deal. After they layed the sod, I really didn't notice that much of a difference in the that area. However, that area had a serious problem with yellow nutsedge and now that it has been a few months and the grass has taken I can definitely see a slope where the last pieces of sod were laid. <br />"

"It was pouring rain, and they continued to work, and they cleaned everything up. I felt bad for them because it was just pouring. They had started cutting the tree down, and it wasn't raining, but by the time they got to cleaning up, it was raining. I am going to use them again after Thanks Givng because I have 3 more trees to bring down. They were great."

FAQs for brick and stone patios, walks, and steps installation projects in Grand Rapids, MI

When cleaning your flagstone patio, begin by gently hosing off loose dirt and debris. Use a mild solution of white vinegar and water or diluted dish soap to scrub the surface with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid using abrasive tools, such as wire brushes, as they can damage the stone’s seal and finish. This careful approach effectively removes mold and grime while preserving the natural beauty of your patio.

Flagstone naturally offers a neutral palette that includes shades of grey, black, red, yellow, brown, and tan, and its inherent color cannot be altered. Choosing varieties like bluestone provides a subtle bluish tint that complements many exterior designs. These natural hues enhance curb appeal and create a refined, timeless look in your outdoor space, ensuring a sophisticated finish with minimal upkeep.

Flagstone for a patio must have a minimum thickness of 1.5 inches to reliably support furniture and foot traffic. Using stone that is two to three inches thick is recommended to ensure lasting durability. The increased thickness prevents cracking under load and enhances long-term performance. Investing in thicker flagstone provides superior stability and resistance to weather conditions, ensuring your outdoor space remains both safe and attractive.

You can paint a flagstone patio by using a high-quality, outdoor elastomeric latex paint designed for heavy foot traffic. Painting not only refreshes the patio’s appearance but also creates a waterproof barrier that protects the stone from damage. Regular reapplication every one to two years maintains its durability and visual appeal, ensuring your patio remains both stylish and well-protected.
