"About the job: KITCHEN: Remove bulkhead, fix drywall, retexture & paint ceiling, install new light, paint, refurbish existing cupboards, build new cupboard above refrigerator, install new faucet, disposal, and dishwasher, new backsplash, new counters, new flooring. BATHROOM: Remove old tile, and install new tile. Mr. Ford is a skilled craftsman who takes pride in his work. From the estimate, to the final payment, he impressed me with his professionalism. He was here when he said he would be, and has the tools necessary to do the job right. Jonathan is very knowledgeable about his trade, making suggestions that elevated my original ideas. He was courteous, friendly, and conscientious about his work. He took the time to clean up the worksite daily. Jonathan does excellent work! He treated me fairly, was flexible, and stayed within my budget. I never felt pressured to upgrade. He was a pleasure to work with, and I have already spoken to him about completing my next project."

"Home Reimagined was given the daunting task of updating our 1947 Cape Cod home to accommodate our aging health issues. This required significant modifications to our family room, kitchen, and dining room. The suspended ceiling panels were falling, lighting throughout was poor, and storage was a problem. In addition, floors were unlevel. To avoid going up and down the basement stairs to do laundry, we wanted to have a stackable washer/dryer installed in the dining room. While we were thinking big, as wanted a dishwasher---as we’ve never had room for one, and an island. “So let’s knock out a weight-bearing wall and expand the kitchen”! Nate the owner never blinked an eye. He was calm and throughout the process he was driven by our happiness and dreams. When we needed guidance, he offered advice. He kept us informed at every turn and handled the challenges of the old home and us old folks with a smile. The bottom line was our dreams and vision were not only made real, Nate made them bett"

Customers say: True professional

"Andy's crew is very professional and did a great job. My home was difficult to get drywall into. They carried each sheet upstairs. Walls finished very well. Dedicated spray equipment created smooth application of knock down texture. Ceilings Looks great. No damage. No surprises. Priced right, but they weren't the cheapest option. On time. No excuses. They protected my property and cleaned up after themselves. As a property manager, I will definitely use Scott's again."

Customers say: Quick response

"We are so happy with the end result! We replaced the 90s golden oak cabinets and installed a new island, counters, appliances and flooring. F&F were very easy to work with, patient with our questions and respectful of our property. I will definitely call them for our next project, and they have my highest recommendation."

FAQs for kitchen remodel projects in Grimes, IA

Your galley kitchen needs adequate clearance around any island installation to maintain functionality. Most galley kitchens lack sufficient width for traditional islands, as these layouts prioritize efficiency in smaller spaces.

If your kitchen has an unusual width, consult with a kitchen designer who can evaluate your specific dimensions and recommend appropriate solutions. For narrower spaces, consider alternatives like rolling carts or narrow work tables that provide additional surface area without permanently restricting movement.

Kitchen remodels require six to 10 weeks for completion, though timelines vary based on project scope and material availability. Simple updates like cabinet refinishing and countertop replacement might finish within a few weeks, while comprehensive renovations involving structural changes often extend beyond two months.

Planning stages add approximately four weeks before construction begins. Maintaining clear communication with your contractor and ordering materials early helps prevent unnecessary delays.

Common errors include insufficient clearance between opposing countertops, inadequate lighting that creates shadowy work areas, and poor storage planning that leaves countertops cluttered. Some homeowners select oversized appliances that overwhelm the space or invest in expensive features that don't address fundamental workflow issues.

Careful planning, accurate measurements, and consultation with experienced professionals help avoid these pitfalls and ensure your renovation successfully addresses your kitchen's specific challenges.

Whether expansion makes sense depends on your home's layout, your budget, and your long-term plans. Combining a galley kitchen with neighboring spaces creates more open, flexible layouts that many buyers prefer. However, removing walls involves substantial costs, particularly if they contain plumbing, electrical systems, or structural elements.

Sometimes, optimizing your existing galley layout through better storage solutions and lighting proves more cost-effective than expansion. Consult with a contractor to evaluate specific costs for your situation.

Effective galley kitchen lighting combines multiple sources to eliminate shadows and create visual spaciousness. Overhead fixtures provide general illumination, while under-cabinet lighting illuminates work surfaces directly. Consider recessed ceiling fixtures that don't protrude into limited headspace.

Lighting with dimming capabilities allows adjustment for different activities. Reflective surfaces like glass tile backsplashes or glossy cabinet finishes help bounce light throughout the space, reducing the corridor effect common in galley layouts.
