"Franos roofing did a great job with the roof and gutters replacement. The installers were very professional and clean up everything after the job was done. The estimate was priced very competitively to the other proposals I received and included all of the options and elements that were discussed on-site. Highly recommend."

"I received four roofing quotes from various companies and found J&K Home Improvement to provide me with the most peace of mind, and what I believe to be the best quality of service. Upon our initial meeting, John provided thorough detail of the roof system that would be installed. He answered all my questions in a timely manner and was on top of communicating what to expect. John was extremely flexible in finding the best times that worked with my work schedule. Thank you, John and crew!!"

"I had difficulty making contact with the company. Waited several days after purchase for call from Bright Sparks Electric contact. I called first about a week later but went to voicemail. That call was not returned. Called again next day and spoke to seemingly disinterested scheduler. I asked some questions and received adequate answers, but was unable to schedule appointment to scope project. After one week, texted contact to verify interest; if not interested I would submit request for refund. Day or two later we were able to agree on date and time for inspection. He arrived on time. We discussed my requirements, his access needs, and work date. The crew arrived later than promised, but ready to work. Job took about 2.5 hours to complete. When they were nearly finished, I realized they had not installed the de-icing cable where it was most needed which I had clearly indicated earlier. They quickly installed an additional cable to complete the job.
Despite the stated problems, the job was completed to my expectations. The crew left the work area as they found it, were cooperative, and professional.
I probably would not use them for future electrical work due to their initial lack of responsiveness. As I can do most uncomplicated electrical work myself, I rarely call an electrician. However, when roof climbing is required, I would rather pay someone else to be at risk.

"Top class customer service! Mal is very knowledgeable and is a perfectionist when it comes to his work. His philosophy of "If I am the last one to touch the house, I want to make sure that nobody can find any workmanship issues with it" shows his pride in his work which makes me trust him and his crew. I first called Professional because I have a woodpecker make a few holes on the side of the house. My initial thought was to fix just the damage which is a small job. I left a voicemail and Mal returned my call. He explained to me that his company do not do small jobs like that. But he didn't just say "sorry I can't help you" and hang up. I was surprised that he was very helpful in explaining to me what might cause the problems and how to take care of it. The fact that he spent around 20 minutes helping me,a first time home owner understand how to solve my problem even though he knew he would not get any business from me shows his character and desire do his best in everything he does, even if it is just to return a phone call. After a getting a few quotes on fixing the problem however, I decided that capping the whole house is better than fixing and painting the house every few years. I called Mal of course and he came in to do an estimate. Compared to a few other contractors who also came to give me an estimate on the trim capping job, Mal is the most knowledgeable and professional. He does not mind spending time to make sure you understand everything that is involved in the job. He is very detailed and does not skim on finding defects that he can fix within reason at no extra cost even if I cannot spot or ask for it. His written quote is very detailed and pricing is reasonable. His crew Ziggy and Martin are very experienced and take pride in their work too. They were polite and professional. The 90+ degree sun did not prevent them from being conscientious and deliver quality work. Even though I did not ask for the entire window to be recapped as it is already partially capped, Ziggy took it upon himself to recap the whole window so that it will look uniform and good. He wanted my neighbor to look at my house and see good quality work. Mal also replaced some downspouts because they were defective, redo some dented plates and re-adjusted some sidings at no extra cost to me simply because he believe he should leave the house in good condition since he is the last one to work on it. Overall, a great experience doing business with Professional Home Improvement. It was a pleasure working with Mal and would highly recommend them for home exterior work."

"This company is outstanding. Our experience was stress free and top quality work was performed by all crews envolved. I can not thank Denny enough for coordinating and overseeing the process, everything went smoothly. We love the outcome and recommend this company to anyone in the market for roof, siding, gutters. They recommend the best for your house but will not push any product. The prices they offer are better then any you'll find in the area for quality work. Thanks"

"Tim (owner) and his team were true professionals that got the job done right the first time, on time, and within budget. I would recommend S & E roofing to anybody who needs their home roof replaced. I liked that Tim was honest/upfront with his pricing, and he was quick to turnaround with an answer to any question I had.

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Harvard, IL

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
