"Absolutely avoid Outdoor Equity Construction and its owner, Vaughn. He makes promise after promise and never delivers. After taking a sizable deposit for our patio cover, I had to constantly chase him for months just to get updates. What was promised to take 60?90 days ended up dragging on for nearly 9 months. When the work was finally completed, it was done incorrectly ? and now Vaughn refuses to return calls or messages. Completely unprofessional and unreliable. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH VAUGHN OR OUTDOOR EQUITY CONSTRUCTION."

"Best Price Plumbing needs to change its name. A year ago I was charged $120 to install a garbage disposal unit. A few days ago I was charged $223 to install a kitchen faucet that I had purchased for $64. (This included a high charge of $54 for supply lines.) The prior day they were out to check the toilet for leak at the base and to install the shut-off valve (for which they charged $30, as well as $15 for a wax ring, much more than prices quoted at Home Depot. ). After looking over the 2 bills, I noticed that each had a $20 'miscellaneous' fee (for caulk, rags, etc), which I had never seen before. I called and was told this was added because their business was not profitable enough. I was told that I should have received a 10% senior discount on the service, but not parts. Rather than issue a refund of $30 on my credit card, they submitted a new charge of $397 and were supposed to reverse the two earlier charges. However, only the charge of $203 was reversed. I've had to ask the credit card company to reverse the $223 charge; and this is currently pending."

FAQs for second story addition building service projects in Hillsboro, OR

For many homeowners, building up is worth the expense because it provides the extra bedrooms or living areas that can’t be accommodated within the existing footprint. A larger, updated home often commands a higher resale price, recouping a sizable share of the project cost while allowing you to stay in the neighborhood you love. Run the numbers with a real estate agent and contractor to ensure the expected return and day-to-day benefits align with your goals.

Whether it makes more sense to build up or out depends on your lot, budget, and local code. Building up preserves yard space and involves less foundation work, but you may need to vacate the home during construction. Building out avoids staircases and can proceed while you stay put; however, it encroaches on the yard and may face setback limits. Compare both options with your contractor before making a decision.

A structural engineer will first inspect the existing foundation for cracks, footings, and load capacity. Depending on the findings, the crew may pour new concrete footings, install steel or concrete piers, add reinforced beams, or tie additional rebar into the slab. These upgrades redistribute the weight of the new floor and bring the structure up to code. Your contractor will outline the specific reinforcement plan and timeline once the engineering report is complete.
