Basement Wizard employees were on time and very friendly. Since these employees were not involved in the original inspection and job estimate I showed them the two areas that needed to be repaired and described the problem.  I also pointed out how important it would be to control the dust which I knew would be created during the repair.  I was assured that the area would be enclosed and air cleaners would be used to control the dust.  Upon completion of the repair I was shocked to find that my entire basement was filled with a dust cloud.  Everything in the basement was covered in a layer of fine powder.  I contacted the original estimator (employee) who offered to have the crew return and clean my basement.  I told him that I had no confidence that they would perform an adequate job and I would perform the cleanup myself.  A couple of weeks later after a heavy rain event one of the "repaired" cracks leaked just as it did before the repair.  A second crew (which included a foreman) was dispatched to preform a second repair attempt.  The second crew did a much more professional job and their repair appears to have stopped the leak so far.  My disappointment with Basement Wizard is not with the fact that it took two attempts to complete the repair.  My issue is that I was assured by the original estimator and the repair crew that they would control the dirt and dust during the repair process.  They failed in this promise and I spend many hours cleaning up after them.

"It went well. Trevor is good at what he does, he is precise and professional, his price was competitive, and he made recommendations that ended up looking really good, he did good with how he placed the tile and every thing turned out real nicely."

I had bought an Angie's deal from Handy Helpers, paying $99 for the work of 1 person for 4 hours or the work of 2 people for 2 hours. The owner, Jonathan Katz, had worked with me in trying to get a date when the weather would cooperate for the work and he was flexible in working with me around my work schedule and other obligations. He came out about 1 week before the work was done and I showed him what I needed done. He made recommendations as to material. He was the one who actually noticed that there was a corner of the patio where the soil had been washed away and was probably the cause of slight sinking of the patio where it meets the house foundation. He recommended a fix for that, which I agreed to. He advised me as to the type of caulking I needed and said he would get the concrete for the repair of the foundation since he knew what product would work best. Jonathan and Chris showed up at the appointment time on the day of the work. Jonathan said that Chris would install the French drain while he took care of another small job elsewhere. Chris did a super job with the drain and hooked the downspout into the new drain so I wouldn't have drainage hose running on top of the group. I found out that Chris had only worked for Jonathan for 4 days but that he had done landscape work when living in Florida. Chris tested the drain, put the landscape fabric back down, and raked the rocks back onto the fabric. He did an excellent job of cleaning up. As a bonus, Jonathan brought a hosta that looked like it had been separated from a larger hosta and Chris planted it at the corner of the patio and house to absorb any water in the area. It seemed that Jonathan's job took longer because Chris finished before Jonathan returned so I think there was some downtime. Jonathan caulked around the joints between the brick and siding while Chris removed the old caulk around the patio door and replaced it. Chris also caulked the joints between the concrete around the house and the foundation. Chris also patched the cracks in my foundation, which was very time intensive. The foundation looks so much better and I think is in better condition because Chris did such an outstanding job filling in the cracks. Chris started work at 9:00AM and finished around 7:00PM. He took a short lunch break and a few breaks while working but worked steadily. He did a nice job of cleaning up .

I would hire Jonathan and Chris again for their workmanship. The only criticism I have of Handy Helpers is their business side of the business. I didn't receive a detailed proposal of the work from Jonathan (I'm partly to blame for not insisting on one) but we did go through the details of the work to be done verbally. Next time, I will insist on a written proposal. I knew that the work was going to exceed the $99 deal I had already paid for. Jonathan provided me an email of the amount over the $99 I owed but I really couldn't match it to a proposal. Like I said, my bad for not insisting on a written proposal. I did a few calculations and determined that the additional amount over the $99 was reasonable, especially since I had observed how hard Chris worked to do a good job.

I think Jonathan and Chris are both talented workmen. Hopefully, Jonathan will perfect the business side so that people have a written proposal to compare with actual costs because I think he does a good job.

FAQs for traditional stucco repair or partially replace projects in Hillview, KY

Minor stucco fixes—like sealing small cracks or adding fresh caulk—often wrap up in an hour or two. Larger jobs that call for cutting out damaged sections, installing new lath, and layering fresh stucco can stretch to three or four days because each coat needs time to cure. A pro removes loose material, cleans and dampens the area, applies a bonding agent, and builds up new layers, matching texture and restoring the wall’s weather shield.

Watch for a stucco surface that stays damp days after a storm, develops dark stains, or feels soft or spongy under light pressure. Inside, moisture rings, peeling paint, or soft drywall around windows point to the same issue. Any of these red flags mean water is trapped behind the siding, and it’s time to call a stucco pro before rot or mold sets in.

Give your stucco a once-over every spring and fall. Semiannual checks let you catch hairline cracks, stains, or damp spots before they snowball into pricey repairs. Keep a flashlight handy, look closely around windows and doors, and call a pro if you notice anything soft or discolored. Staying ahead of minor issues protects both your curb appeal and your home’s weather barrier.

A pro starts by scraping away loose material, then cleans and lightly wets the area so new stucco will stick. After brushing on a bonding agent, they build fresh layers, letting each coat cure before adding the next. The final step is matching the texture and color so the patch blends in and the wall regains full weather protection.

Think of repair as a patch: the pro fixes only the visible crack or hole. Remediation goes deeper—crews strip away the compromised stucco, correct the root problem (often water or mold), then rebuild the wall. If tests show structural rot or trapped moisture, remediation is the safer, longer-lasting route; otherwise, a straightforward repair often does the trick.
