"Brian came over after we had talked with several contractors about a concrete porch underside (in basement room) and one of those contractors made us think the concrete was in such a bad state of "imminent failure" that it needs a full replacement. So, while we continued to get quotes for a full replacement, we also asked a retired architect friend to give his opinion. He did not think concrete was so bad and he was glad we were having a structural engineer (Brian) coming over a few days later. Brian explained why he did not think the concrete was in need of full replacement (very expensive!) and also the damage was not a foundation/structure integrity issue (not "imminent failure"). We had spoken to several contractors and the cost to fully replace is upwards of 15-20 thousand dollars. From the state of the concrete, Brian did not believe the "symptoms" warranted a full replacement and that the more likely issue was simply that we never "sealed" the concrete with epoxy (and only painted the concrete porch). Given the sky-rocketing costs to do any home repairs, it seems more reasonable for us to do first level repair (not replace) that Brian suggests. Brian's honest and informative consultation (for free!!!) is piece of mind and a HUGE savings. We greatly appreciate Brian coming over to educate us - on his own dime. We will definitely ask Brian to come over again if/when we think we need an honest assessment of our home foundation needs."

"On March 7, 2016, Mike Isbir came to the house to discuss the work I wanted done. He had some great ideas, and was kind enough to break them down into "zones" of work, so that I could do the most important ones first, and do various other jobs as my finances allowed. I decided to get the front steps replaced with concrete, two sections of the sidewalk repaired, and a bit of landscaping done on the side of the house. It took awhile to get the job started because the weather was so changeable this Spring. But they were finally able to start on May 25. The job was finished by May 27. Everything went smoothly. Mike's workers were friendly and professional - a real pleasure to deal with. I have been getting good comments about my front steps. The mail lady, especially appreciates the fine work Isbir Construction has done. I look forward to getting the other jobs on my list done. I can highly recommend Mike and his people"

"<br /> Basements Love US came out in a terrible rain storm to address a water leak in my concrete basement. They identified two areas of trouble; my patio slab connected to the back of my basement and two vertical cracks 10 feet high.  They poured concrete and replaced the slab including a bell drain for drainage which came out very nice. Even built a stair that leads to the sliding glass patio.  They repaired the vertical crack by digging down to the bottom of my wall (excavated) and they used this waterproof gel, then filled the space back with dirt. It looks very nice. The waterproofing and concrete work came with a warranty which gave me comfort. They also sprayed the basement with a mold remediation product and did an OZONE treatment to purify the air. "A 40 foot section of our foundation wall was completely rebuilt in June of 2014, and recently a 10 foot section of that wall displayed signs of water intrusion. A representative from KBS came out in late October of 2018 to survey the problem, take pictures and come up with a solution to remedy the issue. On Jan. 4, 2019, the project manager, Josh English, came to discuss what steps were to be taken in the repairs and ask if this was satisfactory to us, which it was. Jan. 9-10, a crew came to initiate the remediation; throughout the work, the lead technician Josh, explained what was to be done and consulted us about placement of various physical aspects (electrical supply, sump pump, etc.), which was much appreciated. After the repairs were completed, Josh again went over the details of the work to ensure our satisfaction, which we were. The remediation included installation of an interior French drain and a sump pump on that section of wall, in addition to covering the concrete block with a non-organic material to prevent mold growth. There was no charge for the repair, as it was covered by the original warranty, but I must add that this was obviously a substantial financial investment by the company owner (labor, materials and travel time) to guarantee that the issue was permanently resolved. The only negative comment that I would make is that I initially had some difficulty making contact with someone to explain the problem that I was having, so that someone could come and evaluate it, as well as finding out when repairs were to be scheduled."

"We had a shed pad installed for our new shed. Bob really worked to make sure we understood the different types of pads we could get as well as the ground leveling process. He was the only contractor we talked to that put the pad in the ground (excavating some dirt) so that it didn't just sit on top. As an added bonus, he swiped away a patch of really thick ivy that we've been struggling with. When scheduling the pad, he did delay the installation due to weather issues, showing real concern that if we didn't delay at least a day, the installation would be less than the professional level he likes to leave with. I left for the morning to go to work and when I came home, the pad was ready for a shed. <br /> Bob shows a concern for his homeowner's well being in all matters and is very knowledgable. I fully recomend him to anyone seeking a similar install, and will consider Rock-a-fella's when ever I have a gravelly/patio/deck need in the future. <br />"

"Wonderfully done work from very stand up guys. The crew is personable and works quickly. Everything that was needed was done and comes at a good cost. We are very happy with the results and would recommend anyone needing any excavation work to go with Brian. All piping looks great, and they did a lot of work in the time that they were here."

"They installed the tile on the floor and supposed to come back to wipe the haze off and then seal. When we called to see when he will come back, he said on Monday at 10:30am. I waited home all day and he never showed or called. When I called him he said he forgot he was off Monday, he meant Tuesday. However, he never showed up on Tuesday, came on Friday. After wiping down we said the grout looks messy and the color is off, there were some skinny lines and some thick and not straight, he said you can wipe it with a wet towel and it will come off. We said can you come here and do it...why should we have to scrub the floor since we paid to get it done. We felt there was alot of bullcrap words....the job was not left nice, clean, professional the way we thought it would be. It took 1-1/2 months for him to offer a regrout and never apologized for the crappy job they did to begin with. We have used him about 5 years ago and he did do a great job, but I dont know what happened to his professionalism and honesty and detail to his work. Losing trust in him, my husband and I thought we would take the challenge to do the grout ourselves and glad we did. <br /> <br />Its ashame he didnt do a great job since we had so many other jobs for him to do. We will need to find someone else :( <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Homer City, PA

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
