"Anthony and his team stopped by to give me an estimate on removing a 6" flex pipe that had been installed in the chimney pipe to vent a wood stove. They climbed the roof, inspected the chimney and determined the flex pipe did not run the length of the two story chimney but was about 6-8' in length. They removed it and also took care of its disposal. And the cost was absurdly reasonable - dinner for two would have cost more. Can’t say enough good things about World Class Maintenance Inc. - these guys are the best!"

"Fred's Chimney Magic refused to honor the "Groupon" promotion they advertised for a fireplace cleaning and inspection, claiming I had a "nest" in my flue. This "nest", as it turned out, consisted of a small shopping bag full of leaves and small branches (see photo below). Removing such small amounts of debris is part of any standard seasonal chimney cleaning. Not only did they try to charge me five times more that what I agreed to pay for the service prior to scheduling a service visit, they tried to upsell me on additional chimney work which had nothing to do with the basic cleaning and safety inspection I paid for (big red flag). Moreover, the two chimney sweeps they sent couldn't have looked more unhappy to be there. No. sooner did they arrive for the appointment, that they bolted into my house as if someone were chasing them--obviously looking to do a quick rush job, with literally zero effort made to explain any aspect of the process to the homeowner. They immediately seemed exasperated and jabbered to each other nervously, as if I were not even there. I felt uncomfortable with the situation from start to finish, as I could tell from the outset, based on their behavior alone, that they had no intention of cleaning our chimney that day without extorting a considerably higher fee from us. When we refused to fork over the extra money for their "nest removal service", they abruptly begged off the job and then quickly departed, visibly annoyed. The chimney sweep who did most of the talking spoke to us in tone which was blatantly condescending and rude. To make things worse, the service was scheduled just four days before Christmas, which means that we were nearly deprived of the use of our fireplace over the holidays as a result of this highly regrettable incident. Fortunately, we were able to get another Chimney sweep out to our residence that same day on extreme short notice, who promptly ascended onto our roof and brushed out our chimney for one hundred dollars less than what this company tried to charge us for the same service. See the dated photo below showing the safely working fireplace exactly one day later. There was such a pronounced lack of professionalism evident in the way the visit was conducted by this company, that I could never in good conscience recommend their services to others, nor hire them for any further work on my chimney. Yes, a chimney cap is essential for keeping birds, squirrels, rain, and debris out of the flue. By stopping stray embers and blocking downdrafts, a chimney cap helps your fireplace run safely and efficiently. The cap also protects the chimney’s inner walls from moisture damage, saving you from costly repairs down the road.
Most chimney caps last anywhere from three to 25 years. Galvanized steel sits at the low end, while stainless steel, aluminum, and especially copper can exceed the 25-year mark. Annual inspections, quick repairs, and routine chimney cleanings all help the cap reach its full lifespan and keep the flue protected.
A good rule of thumb is to set the cap at least eight inches above the top of the flue. That clearance keeps the draft strong, lets smoke exit freely, and prevents back-puffing into your living room. Extra height also adds a little more protection from wind-driven rain and snow without hurting airflow.
The crown is the solid concrete or mortar slab that sits on top of the chimney stack and sheds water away from the masonry. The cap, mounted above the flue, adds the final layer of defense by blocking rain, animals, and embers while still letting smoke out. Working together, the crown guards the structure and the cap safeguards the flue.
