"From the start, David was professional and took a bunch of time to fully understand the project. He gave his recommendations and we decided to wait on the blueprint specs for final quote. There was no pressure or urgency from him. The prep work went great, all the guys seemed very happy with their job and took their time to make sure it was correct. The pour was great, and they left the area clean and ready for me to get on with the next project. I highly recommend David Shaw and his crew and will contract him on my next project! 10/10 have no complaints and is very happy with the craftsmanship."

"Arrived as scheduled with a six man crew. Did grading adding and removing stone as required, but did not roll the graded area prior to asphalt work, which really should have been done. Installed asphalt. My driveway is rather long with an enlarged parking area in front of the garage, 42'x42'. These folks had problems with making sure the asphalt was laid at the same thickness throughout the entire lay of material. They could not finish the project in one day so when they came back the second day they were installing hot asphalt against the previous day's work [cold asphalt], which caused poor seam development. The paving machine they had was too small for this project, but I was not told that before they started. Hence the driveway has highs and lows in it. I am not pleased with this after paying as much as I did for the job. Brought back the owner and expressed my dissatisfaction with the highs and lows and was given a 'story' as to how I had to let the asphalt 'settle in'. "Patching low areas by adding material will not look good" as stated by the owner. Hence at this point I knew where the conversation was heading. I have been in construction for over thirty [30] years, and asphalt does not 'settle in'! Only option is to go to court for a settlement, and it is not really worth my time. Sure wish they had had a larger paving machine. Seams both hot and cold are VERY visible and not good looking at all. Overall the job is okay to the normal homeowner I would assumne, but having experience in construction I know it could have been completed in a better format using a larger paving machine and doing a continuous lay of material. Just too big a job for these folks. They tried, but their quialty of their finished project leaves much room for improvement . All could be finished to a better level of completion by coming back and adding another 1 1/2" of material to the entire driveway. That would fill the low areas and give a more finished even look to the entire drive."

"We contracted with Mike Stollenmaier and Quality Concrete Contractors to pour a new front patio for our home. We met with Herb first who did the measuring, diagram drawing for approval, and quoting for the job. He was friendly and easy to contact via phone and email. We were out of town when the job was completed but were very happy with the work we received when we got home. The old sidewalk and patio was removed and hauled away. Things were neat and clean around the new patio area. We would highly recommend this company for any concrete work you have. I believe they specialize in driveways but did a really great job with our new patio."

"They did a good job. They had a long waiting list, but told me that up front so I was not surprised. In addition to the quoted work, they fixed another issue where a root had caused the sidewalk to buck up and crack. It was a very good experience and I would definitely use them again. A couple of my friends who are not on Angie's List also recommended them to me."

"The Quality Concrete team was exceptional. Someone came out a couple of days prior to the job and made the measurements and took pictures. I had a quote for the work within a couple of days of the visit, The team arrived on the day they said they would, and completed the job that day. The team members were hard-working, efficient, courteous and professional. When unforeseen circumstances arose that required more concrete than was estimated, the company honored its quote and did not charge me for the additional material. I was able to pay for the work through their electronic billing system, which worked very well. I give Quality Concrete my highest recommendation for meeting you concrete needs."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Johnson City, TN

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
