Meanwhile I did several hours digging to uncover enough of the damaged area of the water main to perform the repair. He did say that it helped a lot that I had uncovered the damage otherwise it could have cost 4x as much. The only negative of his repair is that even though I pointed out the hole as accumulated more mud since I had dug it, he started cutting the pipe before bailing it out - so some mud got into the main and affected valves in the house for a few days."
