"Absolute integrity, professional and knowledgeable. Answered all questions, promptly calls back any phone inquiries. Not even a nail or screw found on grounds after they cleaned up debris. Roof installed in one day. Prior to my new roof being installed I had leaks caused by my solar panels. Corey was my initial contact; Michael was the job-site supervisor. They really listened while I expressed my concerns about the solar company ( which caused the leaks in my roof initially) again not sealing my roof adequately. Corey, who was aware of this through his initial inspection and showed us the pictures he took which detail this, offered and did, indeed, return after the solar panels were reinstalled on the new roof. Trust this company; when their job is over they are still willing to be available for whatever is needed."

"Allen was the first person I met, he was the owner of ATCO and had just merged with Carl's Fencing and Decking as of 1/1/2015. ATCO was a separate Home Improvement business for over 30 years. Allen came out and measured on a Friday laid out the project with high quality materials, and had an estimate the next day when I met with him at 8:00am on a Saturday. I used this proposal as my basis for 3 additional quotes. All were very close in price except for one that was $12,000 lower. When we actually got down to comparing apples to Apples this quote now became higher and I had no confidence that that contractor knew what he was doing, he low balled me from the start and I would have been sorry. Carl's / ATCO did a high quality excellent job and was on time, worked though rain every day. I couldn't believe haw fast the siding part of the job was completed. 4 days! that included removing the old cedar siding, removing a chimney and patching the roof, flashing all windows and doors, drip caps on all windows and doors, house wrap, foam baker board the cedar impressions siding, trim, fascia and soffits. Following Monday had the gutters and leaders in in about 1 1/2 hours. The project manager was Eric Wilson, THE BEST, he was on the job site a few times every day. Went over the job with me, and the crew and fixed things he didn't like that I didn't even notice. I will definitely use them again when the time comes to replace my roof and back deck. They also replaced my storm door and outside shower with a new vinyl shower enclosure.
The outside shower, front steps and railing took much longer to schedule due to the fact that that division was extremely busy with all the houses being raised after hurricane Sandy. I told Eric I would be down for vacation from July 3- to july12 and wanted thes rest of the work finished before the 4th of July, I was having a houseful of company. Craig was now the project manager for this part of the job. Schedules were shuffled and my shower was in on July 3rd. I wanted the steps finished while I was on vacation and at the house that week again CARL's worked their schedule to fit me in before the end of the week. I was told it would be done that Saturday, Friday morning a supply truck pulled up with a load of decking and trim. I called Carl's to let them know and about an hour later Craig showed up and said he would get a crew out that afternoon. At 4:15pm a crew of 5 people plus Craig the project manager were there and finished the job at about 8:30pm on a very hot Friday night. Great crew and everyone worked with my timeline the best they could.

"We had our old roof removed and a new roof installed. We also had our large shed in the backyard roofed. I had two other estimates and National Home Improvements was the most professional. I felt that National Home Improvements was more reliable and took the time to explain the roofing process and what was included in the price. The workers were courteous, friendly and skilled. The end result of all the work was that our roof looks great! We would have no hesitation recommending them."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Lakehurst, NJ

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
