"The Buyer's Inspector was extremely thorough. I have heard it said that he is the "pit bull" of home inspectors. He left radon detection equipment behind for over 50 hours. He offered additional water testing at my request. He has provided me with a itemization of all things good, marginal, bad, dangerous of every aspect of my house. He cross referenced these comments with pictures and suggestions. He seemed highly knowledgeable. It will be easy for electrician, plumbers, chimney sweeps, etc. to understand and locate the problem areas in the home. But beware when you schedule: My inspection lasted 6 hours!"

"Initially, Protech set up our radon mitigation system well. However, after having the system for nearly 5 years, we noticed the fan was making a lot of noise. I called Protech twice to report this and both times they assured me that there was likely just ice in the fan and we shouldn't worry about it and the problem will likely resolve itself. Sure enough the fan system failed. However, by the time it actually failed, we were no longer covered by the five-year warranty (we were covered when I initially called). When I called and told them about this, Protech would not honor the original warranty and it cost us nearly $400 to replace the fan."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"I had hired AMC Environmental earlier in June to install a radon mitigation system for me. While talking to Aaron when he was doing the radon system I found out they also handle asbestos. I showed him some floor tiles that were in a bedroom of my house. I wanted to know if they contained asbestos because I was having the floors redone and the wood flooring company would not install the floors until they had a report. Aaron took a sample of the tile and had it tested for me. He was able to put a rush on it for me which was great. It came back as the tiles having asbestos but not the glue material they used to stick the tiles to the floor (sorry I can't think of the word). Anyway, the tiles needed to be removed. AMC Environmental provided me a quote and could do it within the time frame I needed it done which was great. Again, Aaron came back on June 25th to remove the floor tiles. He set up a containment area and did a great job. Again, I was very impressed with how quickly he got everything removed and how well everything looked when he was done. He takes a lot of pride in making sure everything is cleaned up and to the customer's satisfaction."

"Doug went above and beyond to clear up our radon gas issue. He and his team did an excellent job in the crawl space, and installing the pipes outside. He is very professional, but also very kind and caring! We highly recommend him."

"Steeleman inspection working with Ben and Tammy has been a beautiful and exceptional experience. Scheduling with Tammy, she is always seeking to accommodate. Ben is so kind and patient taking his time to answer questions and explain important details, even showing clients smaller details such as the location of their shut off valves, and especially working with First-Time Homebuyers. Many of my clients have used Steeleman Inspections, and were more than satisfied with an outstanding experience. Ben’s professional services and knowledge is second to none. Steeleman Inspections uses top-of-the-line equipment such as 48 hour digital radon detection for more accuracy in truly protecting families to include a full color clear understandable detailed digital home inspection report emailed for convenience of viewing and record keeping that is also password-protected, which is one of the things as a Realtor of 20 years that I love Plus the home inspection is tailored for the type of loan the client has to best benefit clients with the knowledge needed for their home purchase, regarding smoke detectors and railings for FHA/VA etc. From my experience, as well as my clients feedback, the only thing that tops Ben’s professionalism and knowledge is the personal experience provided in servicing each individual client. I highly recommend Steeleman Inspections for caring, professional, reasonably priced, and timely services to include my own personal experience and over 5 years of receiving exceptional services for my clients. What sets them apart is the bonus of them being a Christian-based company as well. ❤️❤️❤️"

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Lansing, MI

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
