"Steven installed new hardwood floors in our bedrooms while also refinishing the 20-year-old hardwood floors in the den, kitchen, and dining rooms. Steven did a great job! Our floors turned out amazing. He is truly an expert at installation and refinishing. Steven was very easy to communicate with and he responded to messages immediately. Steven put down sample stains of the colors that I had requested. He was even willing to mix stains, which is what I did. My floors are 50/50 Weathered Oak and Jacobean. I couldn't be happier with how beautiful they turned out. "

"I recently had flooring installed in my home. There were some positive aspects of the experience. The flooring itself looks good and was installed correctly throughout the majority of the space. The contractor was professional during the installation, showed up on time, and completed the job within a reasonable timeframe. However, there were some significant concerns. I was originally given a written invoice with an agreed-upon price. After the job was completed, I was told the total would be approximately $500 more than what was originally quoted. After I brought forward the original invoice, I was not required to pay the additional amount, but this was stressful and concerning. Additionally, the job was not fully completed. A full piece of wood was left off around my center island. The contractor stated he would return to fix it, but he never responded to my follow-up requests and the issue remains unresolved. "

FAQs for wood flooring refinish projects in Lexington, NC

The hardest wood floor finish is aluminum oxide, but it only comes on prefinished boards. If you want something durable you can add after installation, acid-cured is your best bet. The key to the longevity of any type of wood floor is a maintenance coat when a traffic pattern begins to show in high traffic areas.

Moisture-cured urethane is the most durable finish for homes with pets. However, It contains a lot of (VOCs) that can aggravate pets and people, especially at first. If you’re looking for a low-VOC alternative, water-based polyurethane is your best bet.

Bona sells several highly-rated polyurethane hardwood floor finish products, typically through small, local distributors. Brands like DuraSeal or Minwax also rank well for durability and ease of application. They are available at businesses such as Walmart and Amazon.

You have to seal unfinished hardwood floors to protect them from scratches and stains. The frequency depends on the type, but in general it’s ideal to refinish them between four and six times in their lifetime. This comes out to about every seven to 10 years.

Refinishing hardwood floors costs $1,100 to $2,400.

Wood stain adds a color to the surface. A finish adds a level of shine (e.g. matte, low-gloss, high-gloss) and seals the grain to protect against damage. Some companies, such as Minwax, offer products that do both at once.
