"TLDR: Have the quality of the work stated in the contract, not just that the work will be done. This was by far the worst contractor I have ever hired. I hired them to hang drywall in 2 bedrooms, box in a pole in my basement, box in a duct, finish mud on some drywall that I hung myself, and paint my kitchen/living room. They continually messed up and I had to personally show/tell them how to do their job. The pole they boxed in, in my basement, was over an inch and a half out of level. To the naked eye, it looked like it was leaning. Same thing with the duct they boxed in. When confronted, they blamed my children for kicking the pole out of level, when it was actually screwed into my concrete foundation. They claimed to have built the duct box out of square on purpose. They flat out missed spots in my living room when they were painting because they were careless. You can see individual roller marks on the walls. Drip marks abound. My 10 year old could have done a better job painting with a roller than these guys did. There is paint all over my vaulted hardwood ceilings that they didn't bother to clean. There is paint on my kitchen table. There is paint on almost every door and window in every room they painted. One evening they left and I had to clean up their paint pans and rollers. The drywall work is possibly the worst I have ever seen. I can see most of the drywall seams because the mud is feathered so poorly. They missed every outlet box they cut out in the two bedrooms. Then they just fished the wires through the hole and screwed the outlets into the drywall. They continually did not bring the tools and supplies they needed to do the job that day. Usually blaming my children for taking supplies they claimed to have left the day before when I never even saw them. They went so far as to claim my dog ate an entire 18 lb bag of quick set drywall mud. They often borrowed my tools to get the job done. They left my $600 flexvolt miter saw out on the deck in the rain and below freezing temperatures with two 12 amp hour batteries in it. They would have walked off with my impact driver if i hadn't caught them. They did get away with my chalk line, two screwdrivers, and a paint pan. For real.... They were hired to paint and had to borrow my paint pan. I cant even make this stuff up. Rarely showing up before noon and often staying past eight or nine in the evening. They didn't leave my house until ten thirty once. Sheena left her cigarettes on my 10 year old daughter's dresser. They left an open razor knife on my other daughter's desk (my children are all 10 years old and younger). Their communication was absolutely abhorrent. I never knew if they were going to show up. Once, Sheena texted me that they were on their way (45 minutes, an hour max of travel) and showed up 3 hours later. Some days they just plain didn't bother to show up at all and didn't tell me at all that they weren't coming. It seriously takes 90 seconds to send a quick text saying "hey there was an ice storm and we can't make it today because of the weather." The entire job was supposed to take a week, but to be on the safe side they said 2 weeks in the contract. They finished on day 19. Nearly 3 weeks to finish a week's worth of work. These guys are absolute clowns. If I could rate 0 stars, I would."

While it might be tempting to tackle drywall installation yourself, it's a challenging job best left to the pros. Drywall panels are heavy—each one weighs between 50 and 70 pounds—and handling them safely usually requires at least two people. Professional installers have the experience and equipment to align and secure the panels properly, ensuring a smooth, long-lasting finish that meets all code requirements.
Drywall and plaster are two different materials used for walls and ceilings, each with its own advantages. Drywall consists of manufactured panels that can be installed quickly and offer good insulation. It's generally more cost-effective and is great for straight walls and ceilings.
Plaster is applied in layers over a supportive framework called lath. While it requires more labor, plaster provides a unique, smooth finish that's ideal for curved surfaces and decorative details. Your choice between drywall and plaster will depend on your desired look, durability needs, and budget.
Lightweight drywall panels are about 25% lighter than standard ones, making them easier to handle during installation. This can be helpful if you're doing a DIY project or working in tight spaces. However, they might not offer the same level of durability, fire resistance, or soundproofing as regular drywall. If you're looking for superior protection and a finish that lasts, standard drywall may be the better option for your walls and ceilings.
Professionally installed drywall lasts between 40 and 60 years. Drywall longevity depends on installation quality, maintenance practices, and environmental conditions. High-quality work combined with proper care ensures that drywall performs reliably for decades. Factors such as moisture, fire exposure, and physical damage can affect its lifespan, so regular inspections and timely repairs are essential for extending durability.
You don't need a permit to replace drywall if you're just swapping out old panels without making any structural changes. If you're keeping the wall positions the same and not moving any electrical or plumbing, you can go ahead without a permit. However, if your project involves adding or removing walls or altering the home's infrastructure, you'll likely need to get a permit, which can add $50 to $150 to your costs. It's always a good idea to check with your local building department to make sure you're following the rules.
