"I had a small but complicated, hard to access, and structurally essential repair job on a 60-year-old concrete deck attached to my 280-year-old Pennsylvania limestone farmhouse. I contacted several masons listed for my area on Home Advisor, and included Mr. Grady as a long shot -- I read about his expertise with historical structures and wished I had access to such an expert craftsman, but I didn't think he'd be interested in my teeny job and assumed I wouldn't be able to afford him anyway. He was the first one to return my call and to look at the job, and I thought his price was fair. I believe now it was way more than fair, considering the time he spent. He did extensive research, going over a structural engineer's report I had done previously on the deck and even examining the original architectural drawings and materials invoices from 1959. He showed up at least three times to complete the repair in stages, and has been back a half a dozen times since then to check the job -- and my location is not exactly in his neighborhood. He accepted only enough payment in advance to pay for lodging for himself and his assistant when they stayed nearby one night in order to be there early the next morning. He gave and continues to give free advice about preserving my stone house and patio. If you prod him a little, he might even share some of his personal philosophy, earned over a lifetime of work that is clearly more of an art form than a job to him. Overall, I'd say you can hire one of many competent contractors and get an adequate job, or you can hire Mr. Grady and get superior work by someone who cares about your property as much as you do."

"McCoy Masonry was able to do what other companies said was impossible and replace bricks that were breaking and spalling in my brick staircase and manager to color match both the bricks and grout so that there's no noticable difference. Every other quote involved replacing at least the entire to layer of bricks at more than 5x what McCoy Masonry was able to repair for! Both the work and entire process were completed quickly and professionally. I will definitely turn to McCoy Masonry again for any future needs!"

"F Stone Design - Fernando has successfully completed two jobs for me. One in stone (wall) and the other in brick (Front entrance repair). Both jobs were extremely well done. Not only was the final product first rate, the work was completed on time with minimal disruption. Cleanup was meticulous. Overall a great job and customer experience."

"Well this Mason is one interesting character. After being well versed on flagstone patio/walkway from previous masons, I decided to go with this mans company based on his expertise, quote and other due diligence I performed on him and his company. I received multiple quotes from reputable masons but scheduling was the factor as he could start promptly. Needless to say, the job was completed after a very stressful situation. Jeff Cadle offered a quote based on labor and materials and he was asked to match the existing pathway and of course no had no problem doing that, it will look exactly like the way you have it now, with same stones, pattern, etc.

The first day started out great, he had bunch of workers take out the old flagstone which was on on stone dust/dirt and excavated the pathway. His workers also delivered my existing flagstones to a friends house 6 miles away after over-charging him to the tune of $400. Few days later, he poured concrete from supplier which was not the best type (very coarse full of stones) but time will tell if it holds up.  Then his crew started to lay stones which were completely different from existing stones on the property. He started to use yellow Tennessee flag stones where my entire existing path and patio was installed using Arizona and Colorado stones which were blush, red in color with shades of yellow. I truly believe he was trying to save money by buying cheap already broken up stones from Sissler's instead of getting a palette of Arizona and Colorado flagstones which were larger in dimension. We had discussed in detail about what stone to use and their size and layout prior to the contract!! So the next day during my lunch hour I had to meet him at Tri-State stone yard and pay for stones as he used up the 50% of the deposit I had given to him and he said did not have any money. Be very careful about mason in this regard as I have run across every one of them that worked this was. So I pay for the stones, he brings it to the house and his crew re-starts the job the next day after picking up additional Colorado stones from Sissler's which I pay over the phone.

I inform the crew to start using larger pieces to match the existing pathway and re-do the area with small incorrect stones.  After a week, the job was complete but owner never showed up after meeting me at Tri-State. The crew consisted of four spanish guys and the lead mason William who was very polite and accommodating unlike Jeff Cadle. The bottom line is if you have Jeff Cadle do your job, please write down every single thing and give it to him and record the conversation if possible, otherwise you will be in for a surprise. I feel like I was going to be taken especially after he took the first $2500 (my bank calls me as he does not have a bank account) but after buying the stone I had some leverage and could have taken him to court if he did not finish. In my case, he low-balled to get the job as he mentioned he did not have any work for about a week and then raised the price to $5000 (as the original quote was $4500)  because he said he would do this and that but he did not do anything special. Furthermore, the crew left and did not pressure or acid wash the stone walkway, left splattered concrete on my garage door, gutter which I have to remove. I am pleased with the projects outcome but the experience left a bitter taste and I have learned a lot about stone masons and how they work."

"We bought a house that had a severely damaged chimney that looked as if it would fall over and bust through our roof after a modest gust of wind.  A&T came out and did a quick estimate for us which was quite a bit cheaper than other companies and they also did not try to up-sell us to do additional work (replacing flue, etc) using scare tactics.  We quickly scheduled them to come out a week after the estimate in order to do the work.  They probably would have come out even sooner but we waited to get a final quote from another company.
They arrived promptly at their window and did all the work with neither my wife or I required to be home (a huge huge plus).  They estimated that the work may take up to a day and a half, but finished in half of a day.  After completion of the job they emailed me some photos of the chimney so that I could see what they had done up close without having to get up on a 40 foot ladder.
I would give them A's all around just for what I described, but they went above and beyond.  Because they had some left over materials, they patched up some cracking that they saw on my roof while they were up there  I actually think that this even fixed a small leak in our sun room that I was going to have someone else come out and look out.  Amazing job - would absolutely hire again.

"John handled our aluminum fence install without delay. He walked the line with us first, made sure the layout matched what we wanted, and started right away. The panels went in clean, no gaps or uneven spots. He stayed on task and worked through until it was done. No talking in circles, no delays. The fence looks tight and secure. Glad we picked this crew."

FAQs for brick or stone tuck pointing projects in Lovettsville, VA

Masons charge between $70 and $110 per hour. A mason may have a minimum service fee ranging from $80 to $300. Most bricklayers offer free estimates and charge only if you proceed with the project. This clear pricing model assures that professionals inspect your property before beginning work and charge based on your project’s actual requirements.

A professional repointing lasts 20 to 30 years without maintenance and extends up to 50 years when maintained diligently. This process protects your brickwork using high-quality materials that ensure lasting performance and durability. Consistent upkeep preserves its strength and appearance, providing enduring protection and enhancing your home’s overall structural integrity for decades.

You know your house needs repointing when you notice clear signs such as cracked, flaking, or missing mortar and visible discoloration on the brick surfaces. Additional indicators include loose bricks, water damage, and gaps between the brick joints that compromise the overall integrity of the structure. Addressing these issues promptly protects your investment and sustains the durability and curb appeal of your home.

A house needs repointing to preserve both its structural integrity and visual appeal. Mortar acts as a vital bonding agent that holds the bricks securely together. When the mortar deteriorates, it exposes the structure to water infiltration and further decay, increasing the risk of costly repairs. Repointing stops decay and reinforces the exterior, ensuring long-term protection.
