"A&W representatives were very professional and provided us with a clear explanation of the damage and the options for repair. A&W worked directly with our home insurance company to verify the full cost of the roof replacement and that it would be fully covered under our insurance policy. The roof was replaced in one day. Their was a minor issue with the quality of the fascia that was replaced on one side of the house but it was resolved satisfactorily in a timely manner. I would not hesitate to recommend A&W to anyone needing roof repair work."

"Lifetime was able to scope out our roof project, provide material options, and a quote faster than the other 4 local companies we considered for our 1,200 sq ft roof replacement were able to simply schedule a visit to / and examine our roof. The project manager (Tom B.) was unbelievably responsive, kept us fully informed through every step of the process, and made sure we had a full understanding of the services we'd be receiving. Besides the exceptionally fast and communicative project management, Lifetime was among the most affordable options we considered. I can't recommend them highly enough, and if you have a chance, ask to work with Tom B!"

"Things went well. The work was done meticulously. They cleaned up every day and communicated well as to any stoppage. i.e. Weather stopped job for two days and I was called to inform me. All nail holes were painted to match the color scheme. The bottom line: my home looks fantastic."

We had a wonderful experience with Buff Exteriors.  First, Gregg (the owner) worked with our insurance company to make sure everything was going to be covered.  He even came out when the adjuster was scheduled and set up the ladders for him and went over the entire roof along side the adjuster.  He provided me with the options for our roof and then gave me addresses where they had installed the roofs we were considering.  That way we could see what they looked like on a home.  This was great, because the roof we thought we wanted, from looking at the brochure was definitely not what we wanted when we saw it on an actual home.  After we chose our roof and had the installation scheduled, Gregg explained what was going to happen the day before the roof was to be done, the day of and after the work was complete.  He also explained what was expected of us as the homeowner.  This was important as it made the entire process more expeditious and smooth.  All of us were on the same page as far as expectations. Each person that came out, for example, the person who delivered the trash truck, explained his role and discussed where they would like to locate the dumpster.  The dumpster was on wheels so, it was not dragged across the driveway, marring our concrete.  The person who delivered the roof shingles met with us and explained what he was doing.  The day the work on the roof began, the job site supervisor, came to the door, introduced himself, asked if we had any special requests and let me know he was available for any questions, issues etc.  The owner, Gregg, was at the job shortly after it began and came back during the middle of the job and at the end of the job to insure it was completed correctly and to our satisfaction.  The clean up job they did was marvelous.  I think I found maybe 5 roofing nails and 1 scrap of a roofing shingle this past winter when the bushes and trees were bare.  We had a bad experience with a previous roofer who left a complete mess and damaged several of our plants and our bbq pit.  Buffington was the exact opposite, they moved things out of the way, they covered the bushes, they put things back and they worked their fannies off.  We were ecstatic and have recommended them to 4 of our neighbors.  Last week, I recommended Buffington to a friend and another homeowner.  One has used them and loved Buffington as well.  One went with another roofer and was disappointed.  One is getting ready to have the roof replaced by Buffington and the fourth will be making an appointment soon.  My neighbor who is a general contractor was so impressed, he is thinking about using Buff Exteriors on his remodeling jobs that call for roofing repairs and replacements.  I can't say enough good things about Gregg, the owner and his company.  I am truly a raving fan of this company.

"The provider did a wonderful job both quickly and for a reasonable price. On the very day I talked to him about the problem he came out to look at the roof and was able to ascertain quickly what the problem was. He came out the next day and made the repairs. He guaranteed the repairs for a year and even followed up with us after the first big rain after the repair was completed. We have had no issues with our roof since he came out."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Marissa, IL

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
