Brian looks at the issues involved, gives them a lot of thought and proposes several different possible ways of resolving them. He always makes sure he and the client are on the same page before he gets started, and he keeps you apprised of any unforeseen developments as he goes. He and his assistant Terry were punctual, reliable, and quick, Our issues with the doors (rotted wood in one frame, draftiness and leakage from below and the sides of both) and window (a badly rotted out piece we couldn't fix) are fully resolved, and they left the place looking better than when they arrived. We wanted our house to be ready to carry us through retirement with minimal issues. So our renovations were from the studs out. This included plumbing, electrical, wall insulation and termite repair. We love working with Mr. Smith. He is unflappable. His integrity, calm demeanor, expert workmanship and customer focus is what sets him apart from other competitors. If we have another project or are asked to refer a contractor to family or friends, we go to Joe Smith. I cannot recommend JL Smith more highly."

The tile work was beautiful and well done. The rebuild took a day less than we had planned. He even helped connect us with an electrician and repaired the cuts in the drywall done by the electrician. "Steve arrived on time from Pennsylvania, even though the weather was very foggy that day. He analyzed the work to be done and I said the closest store for parts was Home Depot. I explained that Lowes installed the door in 2004. I took a picture and went to them first for repairs but they said they don't repair doors. However, they recommended Angie's List for a handy man and to use treated wood or PVC material for door framing. Steve returned with a door frame kit. He said the material was wood but seemed unsure if it was treated. He repaired the frame which took 4 and 1/4 hours and he allowed me to use a $25 coupon. The caulk had to dry before we could close the door. When dry, I tried to close and lock it with a key using my body weight to push hard but it would not close. I opened the main garage door and was able to pull hard and lock it from the inside. I called and he came back the next day. I was unsure if I was being charged $124 per hour for him to fix it correctly and I was honestly afraid to ask. He didn't say but either way I knew it had to be done. After two hours I told him I had to get back to work. I asked how long would he be? He told me he wanted to make sure it was done right and to my satisfaction. I told him to call me if he needed me and left him to finish. He already had my credit card info if needed and I asked my tenant to try the key in the lock when he was done. I came back on my lunchbreak a couple hours later. The frame was fixed, he cleaned up the area and he was gone. My tenant said the key worked great and there was no other charge."
